Ha... Gregg let me sit in on meetings and practices. At the time I was gauging the differences in coaching levels. He and Ray Braun (old time Beaver staff member) were a wealth of knowledge and offered me great opportunities to hang around D1 and NFL staff and practices. I will say GS did more than most thought, and certainly I thought was better than MC for the most part. But... boy were they old school! Alcohol was welcomed everywhere and there was no such thing as being PC Smith could coach, but man did we really slack off in recruiting the OL under Erickson. I still wonder what that 01 season would have been like if DiDominco hadn't left the team. Not sure it really would of helped that much. The losses on the defense were the bigger issues. Losing the presidents and Rodgers was a blow. 2001 was evidence of what coaches avoid raiding JC ranks too hard. Those short term talent infusions become massive talent voids if you have slacked on recruiting at the same time.

Recruiting was the bane of their existence, necessary evil. I'd be safe in betting a kid never signed here because of their connection with either (maybe not even MC's kid!). But, afterward kids loved both of their cranky arses. Guess that's why I liked them!

The defense definitely lost a step but it was the OL that was the Achilles Heel of the 01 season. Simonton had a career low in YPC, career low in season yards, and Smitty developed the "turtle" posture when it was clear avoiding the sack wasn't possible.

Right, but DiDominico played as a true freshman and quit the team due to personal issues prior to the 2000 season. He had played as a true freshman at guard during the 97 season, and started at center for the 98 and 99 seasons - so he still had a red shirt year available, and was attempting to gain eligibility as a 5th year senior for the 2001 season. He rejoined the team for spring ball and was in fall camp until he was ruled ineligible for failure to make the progress toward degree requirements.

Lack of OL really hurt 2001. And many years since. Not all. But many. Lines are the life blood of a team. Not news. Have a great weekend.

IIRC, during the last two years of MR2, the Beavs didn't have enough healthy O-linemen to scrimmage. The results on the field were probably directly related. A stockpile of "big uglys" for JM to work with is not a bad thing.
Go Beavs!!
