Actually numbers/stats often "lie"...
Most important statistic omitted... 2017 coached by: incompetence (GAG/Hall) 2018 coached by: JS and staff (with undermanned roster left by GAG's "big boy" recruiting)

Oregon State scored 19 more points in the first quarter this year than last year but allowed 25 more points. The net result is that the Beavers found themselves in a bigger first quarter hole. Fourth quarter scoring was worse than the previous year and defensive fourth quarter scoring was much worse. I tend to think that good coaches win the first and third quarters and good players win the second and fourth quarters. Overall, Oregon State finished net 30 points better in 2018 than in 2017 in the first and third quarters and net four points worse in the second and fourth quarters. Overall, the Beavers' offense was much better but their defense did slightly worse at keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

My take....
2018 -
More wins (1), against a much tougher schedule is a big + for CJS.
The 14th rated strength of schedule may have contributed to more stats being wracked up against our Def. Admittedly... it was not a good defense.
But several other good indicators in there that our offense is headed the right direction. And most importantly, we are re-gaining an identity.
I think at this time it is all about the Jimmy's and Joes. We have coaches who can coach the Xs and Os.... but we need talent and depth.
Lastly.... our freshman RB set a program record for yards... and won most of our hearts. A great building block for next years group to rally around regardless of the QB situation.... Run it first!

Run it first! 1st Q we scored 44% more points and gave up 21% more points, so that gap is narrowed. The 3rd Q we only scored 92% of last year's totals, but the defense only gave up 70% what they did last season. So to me, that looks like the coaching staff came out with a better plan and made better adjustments at halftime, and were overwhelmed in the 2nd and 4th Q.

On the by and large, general sense of course.
