The best thing from that article: • Smith is busting his buttons over a record achieved on another front. "These guys are crushing it academically," he says. The OSU players averaged a 3.2 grade-point average for fall term, Smith says. "Before we got here, (an OSU football team) had never averaged 3.0 or better for a term," he says. "We did it (a 3.0) last term and have continued that and upped it to 3.2 in the fall. I'm really proud of that. "We're establishing some things that don't show up right away in wins and losses. But we need to get some things established in terms of culture before we can take off like we want to." That is what I want from my football coach. Leading guys I can be proud of, that represent OSU well... guys that are role models for the thousands and thousands of kids that look up to them. And honestly, this leads to success on the field. Discipline in life... focus on school and grades leads to focus on the field. I believe it. These guys ARE here to play school, and it comes first.

However I do recall GAG spouting off about how well the team was doing academically at some point. Not calling Smith a liar or downplaying the success, I just wonder more wtf GAG was talking about.

The team did well academically under Andersen. Just because the results were so bad in so many facets under Andersen doesn't mean all the results were bad. Most of the current roster was recruited by Andersen's staff. They recruited a lot athletes that had a strong background academically. The good news is that the team is performing even better academically under Smith. So far under Smith the offense is better, the morale on the field is better, the special teams is probably a little better, and class work performance is better. The last one is impressive because the team had the best average GPA ever under the previous coaches up to that time. Now I am looking forward to the seeing the defense improve from years past.

Jake SHOULD be #1 going in. Well see whether Tristan is all said. If he is, he will win job.

If Jake is the #1 guy right now, and holds on to that spot until next fall, then we're worse off at QB than I had imagined this year. I just don't see it happening, though. I don't even understand those on here who WANT him to be the #1 guy.
That said, it's good to know our academics are on the way up. That bodes well for the program.

Funny, I don't even understand those on here who don't think he's a good qb! Btw, who did you think would all the sudden be named the #1 qb in January once Luton got his extra year?

Maybe EOBeav has a point because the only thing Luton does well is pass the football and what's that good for?

I love how everyone is assuming that Gebbia is going to be the second-coming when he has yet to take a live game snap. It reminds me of the people yelling for Gunderson back in the day. That didn't turn out so well back then.

Luton, while playing mostly on a sprained ankle, under a new offense, under a new coaching staff, pretty much had the same or better stats than 3rd year NFL quarterback and OSU product Sean Mannion did his senior year. Seems to me you've made a quick judgment there. I'm thinking as goes our offensive line, so goes our quarterback play this upcoming year.

No problem, you can work on mechanics at the next level. And it was almost like it ruined him to change his throwing motion. He was a guy being asked to step into an offense geared around a big armed passer, but he couldn't throw the out route and he couldn't stretch the field vertically. So the offense was hamstrung, and we didn't have a particularly strong OL for him to lean on either. He shouldn't be compared to Gebbia.

Parade All-American QB that washed out before playing for the Beavs. My point was not that he was Gunderson. It was that Gebbia is being over-hyped prior to playing a down.

I saw Gunderson throw a pinpoint 40-yard pass underhand in high school. Gunderson was a phenomenal athlete, too. He reminds me of a poor man's Mahomes. He could make those passes that other quarterbacks couldn't make or (often) wouldn't think to make. I get the feeling that he could have had a great college career in the right system. Mike Riley's offense just was not that system.

Seems to me you've made a quick judgment there. Hardly. Luton has just never passed the eyeball test for me, from the time he took his first game snaps until the end of last season. Some of that is out of his control (recovering from major injury), but being a competitive P5 QB just seems out of his range. Btw, who did you think would all the sudden be named the #1 qb in January once Luton got his extra year? Honestly, I wouldn't have expected CJSmith to name anyone as #1 before spring ball even started. I would think that would be a competitive field well into fall ball.

Honestly, I wouldn't have expected CJSmith to name anyone as #1 before spring ball even started. I would think that would be a competitive field well into fall ball. Well, I’ll reserve judgement until the season gets going. I thought McMaryion clearly deserved the #1 spot going into Luton’s first season based on 3M’s performance in the spring game. It was a little closer match in the fall scrimmage but by then it was pretty clear who was GA’s favorite.... and that was on GA, not Luton. Luton had a pretty decent season, all things considered, this last season. Coming off the back injury, new coaches, new offensive scheme, playing on a bad ankle realistically 6 of the 8 games he played, and taking a little over half of the snaps last season, out of all the quarterbacks playing in the Pac 12, he finished in the top 7-10 in the league in nearly every statistical category. Was it a great season? No. Did he do a lot of the things a competitive QB should be doing? In my opinion, yes. Your opinion obviously differs, but I don’t think it’s time to write the kid off. Perhaps your definition of “competitive” is different than mine. Do I think he’s going to be a first day draft pick? Probably not. Do I think he can statistically compete with most P5 quarterbacks and lead the team to a bowl if the Beavers have a defense this coming season? Yes. If Gebbia turns out to be an improvement over Luton, terrific.
