He's prolonging his NFL career that way as well - he's a sitting duck on that pass; lose yards, risk a fumble and get clocked regardless ... yea, smart all around.

Football is a funny game. Sometimes the "bad move" is the right move! My favorite example is going offsides to give the punter more room to work with in placing the ball inside the 10. Another one is throwing a high risk pass on a free play. You might get lucky! Trying to not score in order to run the clock down is a dandy way to go against the grain.
It's fun to see how coaches and players can game the rules!

I remember as early as 7th grade on 4th down plays reminding everyone in the defensive huddle to knock down any downfield passes instead of trying to intercept them.

Sorry, but as a defensive lineman, had I ever had a shot at an interception, no one was going to stop me in my glory!

It's DBs and LBs downfield where it matters. ESPECIALLY if you have to dive for an interception.

Stats=pay in the NFL. an INT>>>PBU at the end of the season when the GM is reviewing the aggregate stats, without context and trying to lowball you a contract.
