Only 22 more days until the Beavers kickoff the 2019 season against the Oklahoma State Cowboys! Go Beavs! Terron Ward=criminally under-used by Riley. A bit of 20/20 hindsight... 2011 - Woods (RS year), Ward, Agnew all frosh... Malcolm had a pretty good start! Ward didn't enroll until Winter term of 2011/Grey Shirt, injured his knee in Spring Ball and really wasn't considered at full strength til mid season. 2012 - Storm had a great RS Frosh year... 940 yards/13 TDs (8th in school history at the time)... Ward was the primary backup, kick returner, special teams and still had 78 touches (68/10) for 494 yards (415/79). 2013 - Split time with Woods... Ward 113 to 127 carries... 521 to 477 yards... 4.6 to 3.8 yds/att... 34 to 47 catches... 280 to 440 yards... 8.2 to 9.4 yds/catch... 8 (5/3) to 7 (6/1) TDs. Seems like a decent platoon, no real advantage to either in a pass happy offense. 2014 - Split with Woods again... Ward 133 to 121 carries... 696 to 766 yards... 5.2 to 6.3 yds/att... 29 to 26 catches... 229 to 179 yds... 7.9 to 6.9 yds/catch... 10 (10/0) to 6 (5/1) TDs. Again seems like neither dominated and both were kept fresh. Ward also had 22 returns over his career. In an era where MR tossed the ball almost 500 times a season the running game may have been under utilized, but not Ward specifically.

The Riley ten yards deep handoff "stretch" play was criminally overused. "We" were a very effective TAG/pulling and draw team at one stage. All that seemed to disappear with the addition of the Fly Sweep. But, with the "inferior" OL talent Zone blocking schemes are the most effective/easiest to implement versus multiple defensive schemes.

The Riley ten yards deep handoff "stretch" play was criminally overused. I disagree. I might be wildly mis-remembering, but that play always seemed to get us a yard, when needed, unless the hand-off went to Ward. I thought that Ward was a better zone blocking runner. More of a gasher and wannabe power runner than an open field runner. He seemed to play well between the tackles in great conditions. Woods seemed to be more of an open field runner. I think that Woods in a zone blocking scheme did not make a ton of sense, especially after all of the injuries on the line in 2013 and 2014. Ward could make something out of nothing. Woods usually could not.
