Found this bit in an article online about USC football:
Helton’s fate should be sealed either way by mid-October. USC opens the season with one of the most rigorous schedules in all of college football – Fresno State, Stanford, at BYU, Utah, at Washington and at Notre Dame.
USC, which went 5-7 last season, could end up as underdogs in four of those six games. Perhaps the most damning statistic about Helton is that he’s 1-12 as an underdog as USC’s coach.
<end of cut and paste>
JS is 1-10 as an underdog. Funny to think with USC's talent, that they cannot spring upsets. If we win the Oklahoma State game, JS will have double the wins of Helton as a dog!

I think we're going to need some luck to keep them below 40.

JS's record as an underdog is, basically, his record as HC. The fact that Helton has even been an underdog 12 times should probably be more alarming to USC fans than whether or not he manages to pull out an upset.

I think we're going to need some luck to keep them below 40. Holding the Cowboys to 34 points or fewer would be quite the achievement. Oklahoma State had the 10th-best offense in FBS football last year. Teams that held Oklahoma State to 34 points or less in 2018: Baylor (31), Kansas State (12), TCU (24), and Texas Tech (17). Teams that failed to hold Oklahoma State to 34 points or fewer: Missouri State (58), South Alabama (55), Boise State (44), Kansas (48), Iowa State (42), Texas (38), Oklahoma (47), West Virginia (45), and Missouri (38). Mean: 38.4 ppg Median: 42 ppg IQR: 27.5-47.5 ppg

Sounds about right. I've been telling people we need to score 45 to win. They're gonna score that many.

OSU will have to improve on Defense to win this game, but not as much as many might think. OkSt played a plethora of teams that didn't play defense, they are starting a new QB (RS frosh or former starter at Hawaii... the former a very good dual threat in HS!), they brought in a new OC and a new line coach. Their strength on D is their back 7 and can give up tons of yards/big plays... 112th in total D. However they take risks and got 3 sacks a game in the first year under a new DC. This will be more of "can you keep up with our offense" and get a few key stops or FG attempts vs TD's on defense. Some folks are high on them top 30-40 type team. Others have real questions about the continuity of their explosive offense vs a decent defense. This game is a win win if OSU comes close or pulls an upset... quality P5 team that is seen as high powered. This game could actually come down to a more experienced QB and 2 headed running game with an improved D vs a finesse offense run by some athletic newbies prone to mistakes of inexperience. Add to that... Gundy's teams typically are not disciplined and will have little respect for our Beavers!

Oregon state needs to reverse that trend of letting teams get comfortable early in the game and stealing confidence. I really hope the coaching staff tells the players No Holds Barred and brings a fearless game plan. The pressure is on the cowboys because they are the huge overdog in this game. Good chance they will be tight and try to keep it close to the vest, against their nature. I hope the D throws all kinds of pressure at them and bounces back from any big plays as if they didnt happen. Fans just want a fun experience and they go away happy. See some creative offense, a defense that swarms to the ball, and most of all come out at halftime with hair on fire! Win the third quarter, let that not be a flat spot.

31. Iowa State
32. Boise State
34. Texas
40. West Virginia62. Texas Tech 66. Kansas State 69. Kansas 92. Oklahoma
99. Baylor 126. South Alabama
For comparison: 127. Oregon State
California, Utah, and Washington are better defensively than any team in the Big 12. But the top five teams on that schedule have better defenses than Stanford. The top half are better than Oregon. And Oklahoma State scored more than forty against three of those teams and 38 against two others.
Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator is a complete unknown at this level. And you have the perfect mix of a new quarterback with a new offensive coordinator.
The fact that the Cowboys defense is bad certainly helps the situation. Oregon State definitely has a chance, but the Beavers defense has to show a lot of improvement for Oregon State fans to begin to think about storming the field at game's end.
