I definitely think we should argue about the merits of various religions on a football board. Sounds healthy and I'm sure we can all reach an agreement about the matter at the end. Not saying that it's a bad thing, but do you not think that that is a factor is Scott Rueck's recruiting, whether overt or not? No---but what Scott Rueck does seem to do is recruit good character individuals that come from stable good character families and a by product of good character families is that they are often Christian.  |

I don't think this turned into anything like an argument of "the merits of various religions", nor was it meant to. It was a comment on the fact that an AD and some coaches at a public university at one point seemed to put their religion and recruiting of some religious athletes at the forefront of their strategy. I'm glad someone pointed out that Pettibone was "inclusive" enough to clearly NOT discriminate against players who were not aligned with his religious beliefs. I did feel that it was a bit strange that at one point in history, a large chunk of our AD projected an outwardly Christian face on the program, and I was just wondering if my perceptions were similarly perceived by other members of the board. |

Your perception was shared somewhat by a journalist at that time. There was an article in the Oregonian, I believe, claiming Dutch Baughman, the AD, was a born again Christian who hired two other born again coaches, Eddie Payne and Jerry Pettibone.
As far as the programs being projected as outwardly Chritian, I don't know. I don't remember who else Baughman hired. And I never heard anything about it below the AD level. Pettibone's beliefs may have helped him recruit athletes who were highly religious. But I certainly don't remember any complaint from a recruit that his recruitment had been neglected because of his religion. That cerainly would have been a big deal had it happened.

Baughman did not want Riley. He was forced to hire him. Riley worked for a month or so before the ad's office gave him keys to the football center.

Had Baughman not been talked out of it by Riley, we would not have baseball. He didn't want to fire Pettibone. He dragged his heels. When asked by a newscaster about Pettibone's fate, he said, "President Risser hasn't made his decision yet." Translation: "Risser has taken it out of my hands." And, as stated below, not only did he not want to fire Pettibone/hire Riley, he never gave Riley a contract. Riley came up here and worked for a couple months without one based on an oral understanding with Risser. Whereupon Risser fired Baughman. We had a temporary AD until Risser hired Barnhart, which was after the 1997 season if I remember correctly. |

I have never talked to any ex-player from the Pettibone era ( and I knew a lot of them) who said his religion had any impact on who played, nor were they ever forced to participate in any religious function whatsoever.
Yes, Jerry was religious. But it did not impact who played and who sat. As has been said, he had a Muslim QB, and Muslim CB, and guys like Tony O'Billovich and Kane Rogers weren't in church on Sunday mornings.
Dutch wanted to hire Rocky Long, which might have worked out. Risser wanted Riley. Riley never signed a contract until Baughman left; he eventually signed it on the practice field, along with interim AD Lee Schroeder.

A person can have, and hold, all the personal belief they want and work for the state... But, we do need to care how that interacts with government money and public institutions and how that interacts with equity, equality, fairness and the best overall interest of the university in how they carry out their duties. The the person cannot internally rectify their personally held beliefs with their duties as a public official, that person needs to get gone. I'll just wrap this up with saying thank Christ we fired Baughman, thank Christ we hired Barnhart. |

Seemed to me that a LOT of Pettibone's recruiting prowess seemed to be appealing to some pretty overt religious themes. I don't know all of the history, but I seem to recall maybe the AD at the time and several high-profile coaches wore their religion on their sleeves and recruited in that vein. Jerry had a Muslim QB. And that Muslim QB, Rahim Muhammed, was a bad ass. A very tough guy. |

Pettibone did two things that really helped the program. He pushed for and helped with fundraising for the original Valley Football Center. It was small, but he got boosters to see we needed facility upgrades and it set the foundation. The other thing that he did is really push recruiting offensive lineman that was especially necessary for his system. But, it also left a good foundation for Riley to build on. Seemed to me that a LOT of Pettibone's recruiting prowess seemed to be appealing to some pretty overt religious themes. I don't know all of the history, but I seem to recall maybe the AD at the time and several high-profile coaches wore their religion on their sleeves and recruited in that vein. Well he certainly couldn't use facilities or tradition so .. |

Every time I read your first sentence, I have to re-think in my brain what was written - I think this would have been a much better sentence if it read: I have talked to a LOT of ex-players from the Pettibone era, and not one of them ever said .... Where the pauses are, etc. you have to retreat to the beginning and re-frame the entire conversation based on the last half. If you've never talked to any ex-player from the Pettibone era, how can you claim to know a lot of them???  |
