WT is not using up a scholly on a bench player from the A10... right?

Would it be better if a walkon earned the scholarship?

It would be better if WT could recruit outside of immediate family and not have to settle on Plan B's!

The walk ons were not even decent D1 walk-ons. Malcolm was not an answer. This kid is not the answer... he's filler.

So, my questions remain. Was he promised a scholly? Is WT still recruiting for a better big?

If three years in and coming off 5-27 this is the recruit, especially the type of transfer, we're going to be in trouble.

Every team has what you would call filler. So filler itself is not a bad thing. The important thing is to get the best quality filler you can which equals depth. Seth Berger represents just above average depth in college basketball in my opinion (was above average recruit in high school). He was among the 1st 4 off the bench on an average team. Him coming represents decent news, but it is not bad news. I cannot see how it would be deemed bad news. It could be better news, also (i.e. the top ranked transfer).

Tinkle has 13 scholarships, by my estimate 9 on scholarship are returning. I am pretty sure none of the walkon 1 year scholarships will be renewed. These numbers depend on Eubanks and Thompson returning, which I would guess happens. I assume any transfer rumors are just rumors right now. I am assuming that Stacy is not losing a scholarship. I am also assuming N'Diaye is returning for a redshirt senior year. This leaves 4 open scholarships. With the 3 freshman recruits and the transfer, the scholarships are filled.  The incoming talent represents a pretty good class for us, but not great. There is a 4 star recruit, 3 or 4 star, and 2   3 stars coming in. There is talent there, including Berger. 

The roster next year should have 3 centers, 4/5 forwards, and 5/6 guards. Not sure what you mean by recruiting a big other than you are assuming we are losing 1 of the 3 centers or we need to lose them. 

Finally, Tinkle has recruited measurably better than any coach we have had over the last 15 years. You can remove the 3 family recruits and the result is the same. Any service ranking recruiting shows Tinkle is performing better than any of the past 3 coaches, even without family connected recruits. It is difficult to compare farther in the past. So any disappointment in recruiting is either an expectation that Tinkle should recruit better than the ~30th ranked class every year, ignorance, or disappointment in the recruits performance. I think that complaining about recruiting of the current staff is barking up the wrong tree. The deficiencies (which are obviously there after a bad season) are elsewhere. 

It is depends what a person thinks, but I consider 1 of the first 4 off the bench on an average team in the NCAA as average or slightly above average. With this type of player I would be happy with 3 points and 2 rebounds per game which is where this player has been.

In comparing Robinson and Tinkle in recruiting you are flat out wrong and if you looked at it you would see that. Here is an analysis for you:

Tinkle has recruited 16 players here thus far. The 3 related recruits makes very little difference in the statistics when you realize it represents less than fifth of the total recruits. There are a lot of ways to measure this and compare. The following are a few. Even though the 2017 class is not finished in recruiting I used it in comparison.

The 247sports average ranking for each recruit under Tinkle is 0.8923 and under Robinson it was 0.8582. The ranking of each class for Tinkle has averaged 37th and for Robinson 74th. Tinkle has more 4 star recruits in less years even if you subtract relation recruits. Tinkle has more top 100 recruits even if you subtract out family. The average is 3.2 stars for Tinkle on 247sports and 2.5 for Robinson. As I stated earlier others have it closer to 3.5 and 3. In the past I thought 1 key indicator would be that Robinson average more recruits per class as this team this past year really suffered from depth issues, but Tinkle is even slightly ahead in recruits per class. Now the big question is busts in recruiting. This one is difficult to measure in an unbiased way. I did the best I could and found that they both average about 1.5 busts per class. I used criteria such as suspensions, academic ineligibility, never setting foot on campus, sitting the bench, and transferring in increments of 1 or a 0.5 depending on how much contribution before and after problems.

Let me repeat I liked Robinson as a recruiter. I think Robinson did some great things in improving the quality of athletes on the team. I just think we are barking up the wrong tree if we think recruiting caused the issues of this past year, unless you want to point to Robinson’s last 2 classes which provided very little after Payton. There is a giant hole of upperclassmen leadership as Payton came is as an upperclassman and N’Diaye and Duvivier were the only ones this year. All the others had no experience with the team. Think about that there was not a single upperclassmen that had been developed in the program after Duvivier left and N’Diaye was injured!

Could we have used Berger last year? Heck yeah - Dahlen started 10 games and averaged 10 mpg

Hopefully this isn't the last addition to the roster. But to get a seasoned player who can give us some height and energy off the bench for 1 year? I'm sure he'll contribute more than Keondre Dew did!
