Not surprisingly, the SEC dominated in this weekend’s draft. As tired as I am of their conference and ESPN’s love fest with them, and as pathetic as I feel it is that college football is literally life in the south, there is no way a reasonable person can deny the embarrassment of riches in talent that the conference has.
The conference had the first and last player selected in the draft, and 59 other selections in between. 15 of the 32 players selected in the first round were from that conference.
I was not surprised by the order that the Power 5 conferences finished in the draft - I knew who had the most talent, and with Ohio St, Michigan and Wisconsin in the BIG 10, I knew that they would be second. Of the 3 remaining more pedestrian conferences, I thought the PAC 12 was a bit better overall than the ACC and BIG 12, but I just was surprised that the BIG 12 would do so poorly. The last 4 rounds were pathetic for that conference. If not for TCU and Oklahoma, there may not have been double digit selections for the entire 7 rounds.
Props to Jake, Brandel and Isaiah for their selections in the 6th round today. I think that they all have a good shot at making their rosters and making an impression. Proud of those kids, who endured some pretty crazy stuff in the transition from insanity back to real football again.
The following is a breakdown of the Power 5 conference draftee totals:
1. SEC - 61 (40 in the first 3 rounds)
2. BIG 10 - 46 (15 in the first 3 rounds)
3. PAC 12 - 30 (11 in the first 3 rounds)
4. ACC - 26 (7 in the first 3 rounds)
5. BIG 12 - 21 (12 in the first 3 rounds)
