Coach Smith did what he had to do. That crap can’t be tolerated. I feel for the kid... he was fifteen when that was recorded. I’m not defending what he said. I’ll say this; I’m lucky....as are many others.... that no one had recorded some of the immature, insensitive remarks I MADE when I was young. Hopefully, this young man has matured and changed. NABEAV makes a good point. A tough, tough world we have ......with good AND bad intentions.....created for our youth. Again, I hope this young man is contrite and continues on a good path. I don't know how else to think about it. It is tough. I can absolutely assure you at 15 years old I was a total moron. I said many unacceptable words, I made many unacceptable racist jokes, sexist jokes etc. I had the luxury of growing up. of learning history and life and the struggles and issues of other people not like me and not having someone around making a historical record of my idiocy. I was 15 when the best computer money could buy was those brand spanking new intel 486 chipsets, you could get a whopping 8 mb of ram, they came with sound cards and it was still window 3.0, but you were rocking DOS for most games still. The nokia brick phones were still 2-3 years out. I wish we lived in a society that was more nuanced. I don't like seeing institutions of learning leaning on "cancel culture" when they find out a kid said some really stupid s%#t 3 years ago, when as an institution of learning they could take the high road an come out with some education plan around it. It would be nice. I get it, I am not sure I agree with it. I suspect this decision is driven quite a bit by current events.

It’s easy to let him go, but that does nothing for the kid. They could have suspended him provisionally and made sure he completed courses in Ethnic Studies or the like. We have seen how much of this racism is taught through culture and through environment. Mount Angel is pretty rednecky—like a step back in time. Does cutting him from the team and stuff undo all of that? I’m not sure. Yeah, timing was a killer.

I'd say the initial twitter reaction from teammates was pretty telling.

I think there is more to this than what we know. As nothing more than a guess, I think he is suspended if he has positive relations with teammates and is well-respected.

I don't think it would have mattered how much they liked him before - as soon as you hear that, you're never going to trust him again.

I'd say the initial twitter reaction from teammates was pretty telling. Agreed. A lot of replies I saw from people who claim to have known him say that this type of behavior is no surprise to them and is typical of him. If that's the case then dismissal is probably the best course of action. His teammates were not exactly supportive either which also sends a strong message. If this was an isolated incident and atypical of his character you'd expect his teammates, his brothers, to jump to his side which did not happen. Really unfortunate, especiallay given the current state of the world around him with this coming out, but sounds like he deserves the punishment he's receiving.

Would have been more interesting to see the reaction if he were a 3-year-starter vs a freshman walk-on.

I think there is more to this than what we know. As nothing more than a guess, I think he is suspended if he has positive relations with teammates and is well-respected. A couple of reactions from two his contemporaries, lend to the notion that he is not a great dude. These are both currently on twitter - posted by young women who DID identify themselves (no phony anonymous names or profile pics), but I am choosing here to NOT name them, as they are not the issue: >"I remember you in high school, you’d threaten girls who wouldn’t send you nudes or sleep with you. So this doesn’t surprise me one bit. It’s unfortunate people as arrogant and egotistical as you exist. Your memorable times as a bench warmer are over."
> "I’ve watched you grow up and seen what you’ve chosen to align yourself with time & time again. In NO WAY am I surprised. I hope you have a better apology for “everyone of color” in your life-especially the ones you’re supposed to be supporting on and off the field."

While I agree with CJS's decision in this matter, it's too bad the kid will be able to skate away without owning up to his comments.
A locker room meeting with the whole team present and the kid explaining what he said and why he said it probably would have been a great teaching moment. If he was able to "man-up" and face his team mates, and let them decide his fate, perhaps it could have clarified to him just how wrong, hurtful, idiotic, backwards, you name it, that kind of rhetoric is.
Swift action in the current climate seems to be the best option though.
Go Beavs!!

I this situation, nothing but the swift actions by Coach Smith and the Ath. Dept would have worked to anyone's benefit including the young man in question. Too serious and like someone mentioned, extremely bad timing.
It's best that he move on with his life and take a hard lesson learned for what he said and did. I think the two young ladies comments as quoted say a lot. This kid needs to stare himself in the mirror and ask a very important question at this point in his life. It won't be easy for him, but he made his bed!

We've all seen racism in sports and know it's there, but it always still surprises me somewhat to see it when it's a field on endeavor that always has teammates of different ethnicities and backgrounds.

Utah's DC - and declared head coach in waiting - just got suspended after the release of an old text using the n-word. He'll be fired shortly.
