Hey, you know what happened to the last guy who shut down a free Beaver message board! Okay, that wasn't so funny so I apologize for that. Is it donation time again?

I'm considering shutting this place down. Maybe until there are actual OSU sports to discuss or maybe forever. Change my mind. You have four options: (1) permanent shut down; (2) temporary shut down [aka a site-wide timeout; (3) banning and enforcing all political posts; or (4) have a politics section. Personally, I support number 4. There is no way one can discuss sports without recognition of its political dimension. The response to the pandemic is extremely political in that every decision made by politicians affects our ability to enjoy sports. That's the extreme part of the spectrum. But NCAA rules are political -- its a different environment and not national in scale, but .... There is also a lot of economics involved in sports -- college and professional -- economics is political. Now, it it's too much for you to monitor, perhaps find a few more monitors.

Hey, you know what happened to the last guy who shut down a free Beaver message board! Okay, that wasn't so funny so I apologize for that. Is it donation time again? One thing that did happen was there were a number of posters being critical of Lucky for shutting down his board. Personally I was impressed that he kept at it so long. There is a bunch of work involved in keeping up a message board. Unless it's your bread and butter income it's tough to keep one going for a great number of years.

I'm considering shutting this place down. Maybe until there are actual OSU sports to discuss or maybe forever. Change my mind. Because we love you, man. Yes, it's a PITA when some posters get out of control. I always was fond of the decision to keep all politics off the board, but I understand that involves some policing. In the P-O days, I RARELY ever visited "the Porch". Unlike Pitbeavs, I don't believe there's any inherent politics at all in sports, so it's completely natural to keep it out. The other sports message board I frequent is VERY often political, but again, I try to stay mostly out of it. Message board politics is probably the least constructive use of time and effort imaginable, IMO.

As Americans we like our Free Speech and as a country we often struggle to use it without hurting others. Just an observation, not a political statement

What does it take to run the forum? I'll put my chit in to do it or help if others are willing.
As pitbeavs suggested, do a political board. Move anything slightly smelling of politics to it. Let the rabid responses run rampant there without penalty, banning or otherwise. One of the issues with today's political scene is all info/data is silo'ed. Whatever your slant, you seek info from sources that support your views. The GOOD thing about BH is we are a community of like-minded SPORTS people with varying views politically and otherwise. I personally think it's helpful to read others' views. Hear from the opposing side. Sometimes posters get too deep into their thoughts, but it's valuable to ME to consider their ideas.
So Glove I'm putting my name in the hat. Take me up on the offer. PM me with what it takes, or post here for all to see. Then hand over the reins and take your needed break.

I hardly ever post anymore but I enjoy coming here to read for Oregon State news and the unintentional entertainment. Here's a vote against shutting the site down.

A combo of 3 and 4. Ban politics on all sports boards... "take it to the porch" as a message board of yore once said. I am empathetic that people use message boards as catharsis. people like to rant and rave and piss and moan. I do it all the time. But I am also empathetic how it can take a toll. Park it over in the corner somewhere and clean it off of all the other boards seems like a good solution.

In the immortal words of Richard Gere - "I got no place else to go!"
I quit Facebook due to politics, and I have attempted to keep my posts here re pandemic and disruption, to those items that are provided by people who are more interested in saving lives than manipulating them.
I would create a politics (aka truth doesn't matter as much as opinion) zone and let people know that any conversation that drifts from discourse to threat is a permanent ban (and flagging people for statements that aren't threats just to cause trouble is the same permanent ban).
I know we are going into what will probably be the absolute worst political event in modern times, but that means we will need the escape of this board as sports reappear. Where else can I post about the world cornhole championship?

Don't post much, but get most of my Beaver news here. Love it and would greatly miss it if gone.

There are lots of places for people to talk politics but not many to talk Beavers. Politics and religion are killers of civil discourse. I have little faith that personal conflicts generated on a political board wouldn't slop over to the sports section. We already have enough members who snipe at each other whenever possible. So, for me, I say take it to someone else's porch.

Where else could I go to give my mrs sage updates and get all the support we get from all of you. I just talked to her and told her about all the likes I got about when she is coming home. She laughed her ass off about ft3 telling me to make sure the bathrooms were clean.

I say keep it open. Push the politics to the side, but there are very few places to discuss beaver sports, and this is a spot that aggregates all the news we can find out there into one spot on the web. Sports coming back will shine a light on the board, and chase the cockroaches back into the dark.
Possibly run a rating system on posts, and set the limit that something gets pulled if it’s 80% negative or something? I’m not going to pretend to know if that’s possible, but if so, it’ll allow the more rational members to police the crowd ourselves.
