"Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery," I don't like the change and I really don't like this line. Seems to me that's a bad way to look at it, I've always thought of the Civil War as a war to end slavery. That's on top of the fact that there's no real connection between the athletic rivalry and the American Civil War. I completely agree. I'm not the best Historian but to summarize... Lincoln wins the Presidential office on the pledge to expand free slaves to all states in the Union and the war starts after the Confederate Army fires on a Federal Garrison at Fort Sumter. There are obviously 2 sides to the war... but the winning side was fighting to abolish Slavery... why look at it only from the side of the Confederates who had succeeded from the union and were fighting to maintain slavery? Bizarre to me. I agree to outsiders the connection was unclear, but I believe the name stuck because do to how close the two schools are... these games divide homes, families, workplaces and to some friends. Much like the actual Civil War divided homes, families, workplaces and to some friends. I'm not trying to defend our rivalry being called the Civil War, it wasn't my idea to use that name... I'm not that old I just wish highly paid school administrators would give a more comprehensive nod to History. Maybe we sell the rights to name the rivalry and pay down some debt?

Joking aside, given how much money those movies make you're probably not alone.

Exactly, but since we're now rewritting history, or getting rid of it altogether, wtf knows!! Someone needs to remind Ed the side that was for slavery lost and the country passed the 13th amendment. How do you ever get past something that happened 160 years ago framed the way he has? What illogical thought, it's disappointing to see the leader of an institution I care for so much thinking this way.

It is any country (or state) that fights. It's been happening since the Roman Empire, and fits our rivalry well.

Too many more important things going on in the world right now. I don’t care what they/we call the rivalry, as long as OSU comes out on top. Prior to 1930, it was deemed “something else.” I’m going to save my “outrage” for other things, thank-you.

I get that it could be confusing to outsiders but it shouldn't be that hard to understand, like you said the name makes a lot of sense. People will say just call it the Civil War but I think it loses a lot of oopmf when the institutions are phase it out. I didn't like when they changed the name of the Rose Garden but at this point I think of Moda Center because that's what's said on TV/in the news. And it does have a lot of history/tradition, which I think is a big part of the appeal of college football. We could sell it but then again we're not Ohio State, we don't generally claim ownership of generic things like "Civil War" or "The letter O"

It'll probably end up being something like the "War of the Willamette".
I'd rather it be Lunchpail U vs the Spoonfed Pricks.
There's probably a fair shot there will be a push to eliminate anything that refers to wars or battles.

Given the PC climate we live in, I'm wondering if it's still ok to hate the ducks?
Yeah, I thought so........

Do I think this was a necessary step...no. But do I ultimately care what they call it, no. I'm sure I'll still call it Civil War for a few years and then eventually adopt whatever name is chosen. It's just like anything else that gets renamed, be it Rose Garden to Moda or Safe-co to t-mobile, it's annoying for a while and then nobody cares anymore.

What respect I had for Ed Ray is gone. This is pure pandering. Future athletic contests can be called The Social Justice Game.
Our Civil War games never had social or political implications. They referenced the competition between rival schools, which sometimes divided the loyalty of friends and families. Most of those splits were for and during the games only, but not all.
To apply meanings that were not there is delusional and serves to cause friction where there wasn't any.
Dee Andros just rolled over.

Don't we all feel better now? The hell with the Civil War Game. Call it a shared outdoor Protest and give everyone a Trophy.
