My great-great-great-great grandfather was Warren Murphy McGuire, a first generation Canadian immigrant, who fought for Maine, during the Civil War. He died so that all men could be free. His boy, George Wesley McGuire, my great-great-great grandfather, was three when Warren died. He grew up being raised by another man, because of Warren's ultimate sacrifice. And that is what the Civil War was about a War for Freedom. It was not a War for Slavery. That is looking at it from the exact wrong direction. That is like a five-year-old's interpretation of the Civil War. To change the name of the Civil War to something else for the reasons stated by President Ray is to say that Warren Murphy McGuire died for something that should be forgotten. It is to remove Warren's sacrifice from the history books. Even if history is not something to be proud of, it is still history. It still happened. To ignore history, to remove it, to delete it, to try and sweep it under the rug is wrong, wrong in every way that something can be wrong. It is to sanitize the country, to make this country something that it is not, which is perfect. No one is perfect. The country is not perfect, never was. To paraphrase a great American Patriot, Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr.'s famous toast, may our country "always be in the right, and always successful, right or wrong." President Ray is no Commodore Decatur. President Ray is Benedict Arnold. You have stolen something that I have always been proud of President Ray and corrupted, tried to make it ugly, when it is not. This is intolerable. This cannot be allowed to stand. I like what you wrote in that first paragraph. Much appreciation to your great-great-great-great grandfather for fighting the good fight! I think President Ray’s comments could have been worded better for the exact reason that you have discussed. Obviously, he was going for the shock value. At any rate, changing the name of the games does no real harm, unless you consider “tradition” to be something that can be harmed. I don’t. We make our way the best we can, and if we can make others feel more accepted along the way, then why not?

Thank you for posting. I strongly agree with your sentiments.
I would like to say a whole lot more on this, but I recently got banned for attaching a link regarding Covid 19. I guess, I can't help myself. One more thing. I feel like our freedoms are slowly being taken away from us. Changing the narrative of history puts us down a very dangerous path.

I guess, I can't help myself. One more thing. I feel like our freedoms are slowly being taken away from us. Changing the narrative of history puts us down a very dangerous path. No one is changing the narrative of history. The real Civil War won't cease to exist. The south won't win suddenly Gettysburg. A Union soldier who died (I am directly related to three) will not suddenly have died in vain because of this change. In my way of thinking, after receiving considerable, thoughtful input from some of the athletes who actually played/play in the rivalry, the schools decided they no longer wanted their sports series named after a conflict that divided the Union, resulted in a divisive war that killed 600,000 Americans (about half of whom were fighting to preserve the right to enslave another race of human beings), resulted in the postwar terrorizing of black Americans and in many ways still divides our country today. Things change as circumstances change. At one point OSU was OSC, and before that OAC. The Dodgers were named the Bridegrooms, Robins and Supurbas and played in Brooklyn, the Giants played in New York, the A's played in Philadelphia and Kansas City, the Orioles played in St. Louis and the Braves played in Boston and Milwaukee. Kansas used to play Missouri and Texas used to play A&M. Blacks used to be excluded from MLB, the SEC and the ACC. But things changed as circumstances changed. As always, other's mileage may vary.

I’ve been pro-Platypus since they rediscovered the trophy 10+ years ago. I can’t stand Canzono, but I agree with him on this one.
The Platypus Bowl. I’m for it.

The revamp of terms that have the potential to offend is occurring in many fields of endeavor at this point....
In my profession, at one point multi-instance deployments of database, processor, containers etc. might be described as a "master/slave" configuration (where the master controlled the other processing units), it is now suggested that this configuration be described as leader/follower or parent/helper. Note that a similar concept exists in multi-flash photography, multiple railroad locomotive configuration, car clutch cylinders, and recording studio tapes (the "master" copy).
Network addresses from which you accept traffic are "whitelisted" while ones that you reject for whatever criteria they fail are "blacklisted" - this situation is now being suggested to be called the "allow list" and the "deny list" or "exclude list".
It has been many years since I have been a "hands on keyboard" coder who gets to test code, but there is testing concepts called "whitebox testing" (where you know the structure of the code) vs. blackbox testing (where you test behavior without knowing the underlying code structure) vs. greybox testing (where you first test behavior without knowledge of underlying code structure but then examine code structures, usually to hit various test code coverage criteria required to ship product), I wonder if that will change as well, but I think I better check and revise my language should I need to talk about testing.
As a pilot, I see there is currently vigorous debate about how the FAA regulations referring to an "airman" creates an unfriendly environment for non-males.
Linguists have questioned whether changing language actually alters the underlying concepts. Harvard's Stephen Pinker, describing what he called the euphemism treadmill, observed that people generate new terms to free ideas of baggage with little success. "Water closet" becomes "toilet," which becomes "bathroom," which becomes "restroom." The language changed, but the meaning remained the same.
Will be interesting to look back and see if these linguistic changes drive true change. I guess time will tell.

I thought the Apple cup was lame. The platypus bowl would be the joke of college football.

I thought the Apple cup was lame. The platypus bowl would be the joke of college football. I actually thought the Apple Cup name was kind of cool, given the production of apples in Washington. But the name is only used for the football rivalry, which is OK, but not as great as the Civil War was.
Back at tOSU, they called their rivalry game with Michigan "The Game," which I thought was lame and uninspired.
The Civil War is one of the longest rivalries in college, so it needs a good name to move forward.

In the spirit of prince the game should be called. “The Big Brawl” Formally known as the Civil War In the true spirit of Prince, the game should be called some mashed up symbol of all the different sports, and let them try to pronounce/remember it. The Foosocketball Brawl. (Probably need a few more sports in there.)
