When have we lost to a D2 school? When have we lost to Portland State? Thank you. I was using the D2 term inappropriately, based off another user's post.
I should amend my post to say that playing the PSUs, Eastern Washingtons, and CSU Sacramentos of the world are great opportunities to tune up our team. A test of skill and rarely a gimme. But at least we aren't being fed to the likes of tOSU or Michigan on opening day.

I agree. I have no problem playing one home game against FCS opponents.

I really think we will never be at the level of Michigan or Ohio State. I doubt we can be as good as Oklahoma or Okie State. When You are 9 th or 10 th in Recruiting in a conference where USC and UCLA and Stanford and Uw are not great..... well it speaks for itself. I had a Athletic Dept Elployee that called Me to see if I wanted extra tickets a Year or so ago tell Me we would never be like Clemson. Well u of o has dillusions of greatness. I hate them but they get top 10 class year after year. We are 70 ish which means to Me with great coaches 6 or 7 wins max. Until the recruiting and the institution strives for more it tells Me again do not expect a top 10 Team. How about a top 30 team?

How about a top 30 team? uo had 1 good year then Phil Knight went all in and pumped the better part of a half billion bucks and the power/allure of Nike into their athletic program. IF OSU had that kind of donor and organization behind it's sports programs they could very likely compete as well. USC, UCLA, Stanford and UW are always going to clobber us in recruiting unless maybe I become their coach. Some schools do have advantages because of the population of the city they are in, the size of their fan base and the money behind them. We had a top 30/40 team for the better part of 15 years and several message board fans wanted to dump the coach. Oh well.

I think with the right kind of leadership and a few winning seasons, we can look toward that goal. I think we are not far out of being a top 30 team, if last year's progress was any indication. But that progress has to be consistent and have the backing of the university.
Making it to the level of a Michigan or Ohio State means being able to win in clutch situations. That was a weakness of ours even in the Riley years.

He kept us competitive and kept the program wholesome. The Beaver's performance in the Civil War the year we had an opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl was, in my opinion, the first real black mark on his record. That game still hurts.
As for recruiting, the players will go to the best school available. Until we become that choice, we will lose them. But our baseball team (back in the day) wasn't able to rely upon their championship record to recruit players. Casey built them into a championship team.
Coaching matters. Success matters. Consistency matters. Can we get all three?

Generally true of Ohio State. Not true of Michigan under Harbaugh!

You have to aspire. I remember the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame and then watching the alleged national championship game between Florida State and, I think Oklahoma. After that, there was no doubt in my alleged mind, who the best team in the country was.

We had one Year after 2000 season we played for Rose Bowl 65-38. Horrible watching chimp Kelly’s team run a fake punt on us. Yes we can be in top 30 sometimes. We seemed to win very few road games. We used to get drilled by Boise which reminded Me of the Fresno thumping. I was told by athletic dept employee honestly the pool we swim in. It disappointed Me at the time. Mediocre and low aspirations. A bad problem in my book.

Your last comment about low aspirations could not have been said better. Aspire to high levels of performance.
