It’s Fall 2023 and the Reser Renovation project is complete and shiny new. That will give us recently constructed training facilities for:
Basketball M/W, Gymnastics, Rowing M/W Wrestling.
New and newly renovated shared performance and weight training center.
New Track and Field facility.
Multiple renovations and stadium expansions for Baseball.
Field lighting for Softball.
So what should be next? Here’s my list, not necessarily in this order of priority.
Spectator facilities for Whyte Track and Field Facility. People would like to attend track meets and not have to bring their own folding chair. I have to imagine it makes recruiting difficult when the recruits see that there no provision for spectators at their home field.
Lorenz Field. Seems to look like temporary grandstands. A permanent stadium would be appropriate for this facility shared by M/W programs.
What about Gill? I think Gill is fine with the recent renovations and enhancements. It’s in the perfect location on campus and within the “Athletic Village”. It’s got great sight lines and is a splendid place to watch - and I think to play - college basketball, especially when full. I’ve been to the *ucks new Knight Court and I wouldn’t trade ours for theirs. No way.
I’d be interested in others thoughts.
(PS I know this is the Football Board, but we don’t have a “Facilities” board and being as it’s the off season it seemed like an appropriate place as any to make this post.)

Work with the engineering school to develop a solar dome for Reser. Turn Reser into a power producing year round all-weather multi-use facility.
Along the way get some patents so the school can lock in rights for revenues from future solar stadium dome projects around the country.

Nice topic. And maybe we should have a facilities board.
Some ideas that rattle around in my head when I dream of winning $700M in a Powerball lottery:
1. What I would really like to see is the old power plant repurposed into a 2K volleyball/wrestling arena and volleyball offices. Volleyball could practice there all year, ease some stress off Gill. I know there are some asbestos issues with that building but if it is ever going to be reused, or even torn down, they have to be addressed anyways. Gonna take a big dedicated donation to get that done. I'd like to think we could get some university help to deal with asbestos issues.
2. Yes, I'd agree with an 800-seat grandstand for track. It would be nice to build something permanent and tall enough to install indoor jumping pits under the grandstand for year-round practice.
3. As offices move out of Gill it would be nice to add a restroom or two or a nice cocktail lounge area in their place. Wyoming has a nice bar area on the concourse of its arena.
4. I'd like to see a grandstand like Fenway Park's above the left-field fence at Goss. Even if that means moving it in 15-20 feet and creating an orange monster. I think those would be premium seats and a nice revenue source and make our stadium distinctive. I'd also like to see the original grandstands at Goss above the concourse be gutted and rebuilt so they top-load, with a press box/suites on top from first base all the way around to third base.
5. I'd like to see the Reser Terrace converted into a party deck with access for everyone. Vendors would love it. It's practically empty and way underused with the current restricted access.
Lorenz Field just got a new metal grandstand. It's not top-flight, but from what it looks like (haven't attended a game there yet) it's a big improvement from the old wooden bleachers that we scavenged from the old Valley track.

I like some of the ideas proposed here, but my wish/hope would be about a $50M remodel and upgrade of the interior of Gill, and truly bring it up to 21st Century standards, removing the interior concourse, providing new seating sightlines, an endzone courtview lounge-restaurant. Something different, something that screams WOW! I have always thought the large plaza out front of Gill would be a great location for a nice public access OSU Hall of Fame

For Lorenz, I would throw in onsite locker rooms/club house for the teams to go into during halftime, and change before and after the matches. And if possible, install a terrace behind one of the goals for the ultras.
Softball field, a team club house just like at Goss for baseball.

Not so. You do not need Historic Resources Commission approval for changes on the inside. The HRC only involves itself on issues that alter the original look of the outside of buildings. And they quickly approved the recent changes to the front steps and to Parker Plaza.

The commission needs to go away. It is a detriment to progress.

That my understanding. Gill is frozen in amber as far as major expansions or exterior alterations are concerned due to the historical district designation. The only alternative would be a new arena outside of the central campus. Anything’s possible for a couple $ hundred million.

The bowl of Gill Coliseum would be the next project I want to see done. Hopefully we are still having success in WBB and MBB and a donor can step forward and donate a lead gift to make it more modern. Gill is a loud building when full and has great sight lines. I love the old school buildings with upgraded amenities versus the cookie cutter buildings.
Secondly,I would continue to do whatever Reser Stadium needs to stay relevant. The two revenue sports need to always be priority one because they pay the bills. I loved osu track and field and baseball but those are down the list of priorities imo....way down the list.

You would have a pretty good vantage point for the games from the second floor on up. Maybe even engineer the building to accommodate viewing. Kind of like the rooftop stands at Wrigley.

The only alternative would be a new arena outside of the central campus. Anything’s possible for a couple $ hundred million. Again, not so. The front steps and Parker Plaza were completely redesigned recently. Brackets for banners that did not exist when it opened have been added to the front. An entrance in the Northwest corner was completely redesigned quite some time ago and an existing outside stairway was removed. There are numerous historical photos of Gill with a message board above the front entrance. If it wished to do so, the university could make an excellent case to have one added, citing historical precedence. The HRC has numerous provisions for adaptive reuse. I thought the lower bowl of Gill was redesigned several years ago, with brand-new bleachers installed throughout?

I'd like to see a parking garage built on the west and south side of Reser. Wouldn't mind paying a parking fee to park there. It will generate more revenue for the football program.

To piggy back Henry's dream of winning the $700 million powerball and using it for upgrades I would love to build a portable canopy for the softball field so there would never be rainouts, softball could host OOC tournaments before league play and youth softball could use it for tournaments. I would even allow tsdtr use it if needed, for a fee of course.
