I created this same thread a few months ago. The ever witty Judge Smails replied he expected the leaves to fall. He never disappoints... I said then I expect that we make a bowl game this year. I still believe that to be true. Do you ?
I have followed coach Smith since he first arrived in Corvallis as a player. At that time I lived in Corvallis so I watched practice nearly everyday. He always struck me as a player who was distant from others. When he wasn't taking reps he would kneel down by himself a few yards away from everyone and observe. The players comments were...He wasn't a standout but he always seemed to make plays.... I think he was very good at reading defenses and he had a knack for knowing where to go with the ball. He was blessed with quality receivers who made his job a lot easier. He was a young man who knew his limits and played the qb position to the fullest of his abilities. He still strikes me as someone who has a very analytical mind on the sidelines. He doesn't show his emotions like others but at the same time he is playing the chess match mind game with his opposite across the field. He knows the destination of where he wants his program to reach. He has the know how to get it there. His players respect him and they play hard for him. He also lets his coaches coach. There is a fine line between delegating authority and being a micro manager to achieve loyalty, cohesiveness and longevity within your staff. As the head man it is also your responsibility to make hard decisions when it comes to your staff. Game planning, in game adjustments and schemes. No one holds your coaches accountable except you. Bottom line is it's coach Smiths job to win games. This is year 4. He needs to show tangible results. So far he is doing that to a certain degree. I don't see the talent or the schemes necessary to rise above the expectations of being more than bowl eligible....yet ! The questions he has to answer are is the talent currently on the roster good enough or does he need to make changes on his staff to get better ? Maybe some of both ? We shall see on down the line.....

Good assessment. The potential is there. Results are pending, but I think the direction is definitely on a positive path for long term success.

Smiths passing was over 50 percent. He threw the ball away a lot. He is very reserved and is on par for success. We could win all the remaining games. Because of match ups Utah, Stanford, ASU will be our hardest games in my mind. Beating USC was good but they are not good. If we are lucky and can pass again I believe we win 8-10 games. If we stay like last 2 games I see us 6-6 or 7-5. I agree we may need to recruit better. We are better and it shows. To get to top of league we probably need to recruit top 25 or so. Now we are around 50. Hoping for big things.

Everyone saw what happened to us at wazzu. Not a lot of confidence in Tibesar right now. Let's see how the team responds after the bye. It's the million dollar question right now for sure....can our defensive coaches scheme these guys into success? Or do we not have the talent anyway?
We would be looking a lot better with a more athletic D line. Getting Hodgins back would be nice.

We would be looking a lot better with a more athletic D line. Getting Hodgins back would be nice. The issue that I have with Tibs is that he gets out-chessmatched. He came in with a great game plan. But Wazzu changed it up at halftime a couple of times, and Tibs always seemed a step or two behind. The Cougars are not very talented but are very well coached. Utah is more talented and also very well coached, which is a concern. Hodgins would be a big add for the defense. His addition would help everyone else to not have to work so hard. Plus, it would help cover Tibs' general lack of ability to change it up on the fly. I still hate the 3-4. In theory, the 3-4 should work its best against a spread team like Wazzu and yet the Cougars' 4-3 made the Beavers' 3-4 look like hot garbage.

Is Gebbia ready to go? Or is he still hurt?

Chance is great with his legs. But, I'd rather see the team captain out there.

Gulbranson for next year? I saw some videos. He's got a good arm.

Chance's footwork. Ball floats.

Chance's footwork. Ball floats. From what I have seen, Chance Nolan is clearly the quarterback of the future. They just need to fix his footwork. Maybe Oregon State can hire Langs away from Colorado to work on Nolan and the other quarterbacks.

My expectations were to show improvement and make a bowl game.... I thought 7-4 would be our ceiling. We are currently exceeding my expectations from my preseason prognosticating...
My question is, should JS get more involved in the offensive play calling? If the TV guys are right... Langsdorf does all of the play calling now... but Coach Smith is also pretty darn good at it. I know it doesn't fix the defense but until that is fixed outscoring the other team is a viable strategy to a win.

If no 6-6 at the bare minimum, people are going to be pissed.
