To my feeble mind, the x's and o's (and DC) say 3-4 but the jimmies and joes scream 4-3.
Go Beavs!!

The dreaded vote of confidence? I prefer to focus on the closing sentence of "It's got to get better". In the working world I live in, the means someone has a PIP in place.

Very brilliant reference! If only our defense looked befitting of a law enforcement reference.

We’ve saw some improvement in our defense last year, and until the Wazzu game, our defense wasn’t terribly exposed. Run defense had been pretty strong too. If we remember that we’re still working with guys who came to OSU when we couldn’t buy a win, then maybe we can give them a little more time before we call for their necks.
Wazzu played us right and had the talent to do so. We’ve got to shore up those weaknesses and give Utah hell.

"....THE THIRD DOWN DEFENSE, THOUGH, NEEDS WORK. SMITH SAID THE DEFENSIVE STAFF SPENT THE MAJORITY OF MONDAY DIVING INTO THAT TASK."
Are you fricking kidding me? So suddenly NOW Tibesar and his minions decide that third down defense is a problem? Where the hades has Tibs been for the last three years?? Well, excuse me if Im not buying this or any other part of Smith's mealy mouth rationalization of Tibesar's overall failure as his DC.
The simple fact is that Tibesar is, far too often, in over his head and unable to keep up with opposing OC's effective in-game and half-time adjustments to his overly conservative and unimaginative defensive game plans.
Tibesar simply shouldn't be DC at any power five school. Hiring him was Smith's worst mistake since he was took responsibility for OSU's football fortunes. And keeping him in place for another season simply isn't fair to our players on the defensive side of the LOS or to OSU fans in general. In spite of Smith's sentiments in the Oregonian article, my guess is that Tibesar will be replaced after this season is over.

it's just coachspeak, Smith is not happy with Timmy Tube Top's defense...things will be changing in the off-season.

GAG couldn't recruit D linemen, and that was his thing! He missed on JC guys as well. I'm not saying a change won't be made, or doesn't need to be made......I'm just saying that we were HORRIBLE on defense in the GAG years, and we are still coming out of that. I think if we see the continued uptick in recruiting, and kids with options coming over via the transfer portal, most of the problems will be will be solved by sheer athletic ability. That said, I'm all for Smith moving on from Tibs if that's what needs to happen. My only question is.......can Tibs improve? It's easy to just say get rid of the guy.....but is he capable of being better? When he has better talent to work with?

Take a look at the 2 deep on Wisconsin’s DL and try to realize where he came from and what he’s used to working with. Each of their DEs are 287 pounds +. Heck, look at Hawaii’s 2-3 deep and look at how much bulk is on that defensive line. I read an article that mentioned Tibesar’s arrival… even his wife apparently took a look at our guys and said “they’re tiny”.
Smith gave Tibesar a longer contract than the other assistants and said the reason was the defense was a multi-year project at the time. For whatever it’s worth, Smith must be somewhat invested in trying to make a 3 man front work here for the long run. Our guys are getting bigger the hard way, diet and weight room, they’re still not badger sized but they’re getting closer.
This team, and the defense, is noticeably better than it was. I doubt it’s finished. The program, and the defense, is obviously going in a good direction. If Smith is unhappy with things he’ll probably make it known privately to Tibesar at some point, but in the meantime they’ll likely keep working at it.

Riley and Co. were mailing it in before Nebby bought out that awful contract.....the cupboard was bare for sure......then in swoops GAG who proceeded to completely destroy the program. Historically, we have had "spurts" of success, but mostly a poor football program. I'd say Smith is doing a fantastic job considering where we've been. While I would love for the defense to be more consistent, they haven't been horrible this season......yea wazzu adjusted and blew us up in the second half....it happens. Kudos to Rolovich and Co. Personally, I've kinda moved on and am looking forward to see how our staff responds against Utah. We have an extra week and our staff has continuity on its side......now maybe Tibs is a dead coach walking already, I dunno.....but I'm willing to still hope he can improve as a DC, and ultimately I have faith in what Niner decides is best for the team.

We weren't very good in 3rd down D at the end of Riley's tenure either. Bingo. For whatever reason it's tough to get huge, athletic run-stoppers AND slightly smaller, more athletic ends to OSU. We've had a few of each over the years, hardly ever been able to put it all together. Because the pool of recruits is very limited, OSU tries to fill the D-line needs in 2 ways: transfers and projects; projects take 2-3 years and transfers are hit and miss.

Would agree with everything you said except for Riley's contract. While it was a lifetime type contract, the amount we were paying him was peanuts compared to other coaches. I think his contract was actually a good thing for us.
