Yes this is true. Riley and Co. were mailing it in before Nebby bought out that awful contract.....the cupboard was bare for sure......then in swoops GAG who proceeded to completely destroy the program. Historically, we have had "spurts" of success, but mostly a poor football program. I'd say Smith is doing a fantastic job considering where we've been. While I would love for the defense to be more consistent, they haven't been horrible this season......yea wazzu adjusted and blew us up in the second half....it happens. Kudos to Rolovich and Co. Personally, I've kinda moved on and am looking forward to see how our staff responds against Utah. We have an extra week and our staff has continuity on its side......now maybe Tibs is a dead coach walking already, I dunno.....but I'm willing to still hope he can improve as a DC, and ultimately I have faith in what Niner decides is best for the team. Would agree with everything you said except for Riley's contract. While it was a lifetime type contract, the amount we were paying him was peanuts compared to other coaches. I think his contract was actually a good thing for us. Agree to disagree then. Might have been a decent idea when BDC did it I spose, but by the time nebby swooped in, it was clear Riley was pretty much toast. I still remember thinking nebby was crazy to can pellini and follow up with hiring Riley.....Pellini was an A, but he won.....Riley was never going to win at Nebby.....but golly gee whiz he wasn't gonna be an asshole!

Pellini basically averaged 9 and 4 his last 4 years at Nebraska. Riley revamped both the offense and defense at Nebraska, had one down year but still went bowling, then went... 9 and 4 ... then, despite a good defensive year (under 24 points a game) the AD forced him to fire Banker and bring in Diaco and the team ended up giving up over 36 points a game. Riley was never given a chance.

He's a pretty good football coach, not a great one......pretty good, and hip hip hooray ain't gonna cut it at Nebby

Two things really bothered me about Riley - 1) He was ‘vocally’ always describing Corvallis as a tough place to recruit to . I don’t disagree with that thought - but, keep it to yourself , don’t make it a self fulfilling problem. It’s your job to make it a destination school ( look at what Casey and Rueck and Erickson , et al did and are doing ! 2) His demeanor on the sidelines and in post game comments were not indicative of a guy that really wanted to win, or a guy that was engaged in the process of winning ! Smith, conversely, is building a comprehensive PROGRAM , with no apologies, no complaints about Corvallis, etc. He is Calm and still positively engaged on the sidelines and he challenges the calls and makes ‘in game’ decisions that can affect the outcome ! As regards Tibesar - I don’t like the zone coverage, at all . We need the WSU scheme that effectively shut Nolan down .

Like he couldn't wait to get the F out......just I'm outa here, see ya suckers! I'd have to go back and watch the game, but WSU got pretty consistent pressure on Nolan.....not sure how much they blitzed vs just getting pressure with down linemen. It seemed like our O linemen had all they could handle, and more from the wazzu D line......on the flip side, our guys were easily blocked......I dunno, some of it was hometown crowd, momentum type stuff.....the stuff u cant really quantify, but it absolutely matters and gives the team juice.

And then Gary Andersen came in, who really wanted to win and was "engaged in the process" and lacked the sheer ability to do so. And then calm Smitty comes in and it's somehow different than Riley? I like the calm composure shown by both Riley and Smitty. It beats the outright buffoonery of GAG.

If it were me, my farewell speech would have been something akin to: There was a 30 minute documentary style look at Coach Mike Riley that I saw - I think it was on Comcast Northwest - that showed what Riley was about as a coach. Since I saw that show some 15 years ago I have always thought highly of Coach Riley as a football coach. I admit his communication style and attitude for the public did not impress me, but when recalling the documentary I kept thinking "this guy knows his stuff.". Much like Riley, I think Coach Smith knows a lot about football, especially on offense. I think Coach Smith WANTS to stay in Corvallis and wants to coach the Beavers for years to come. I think he might see an offer from an NFL team for an OC spot in the next 3 to 5 years, but I don't think he leaves OSU.

You can never assume someone with smarts, drive and enjoys new challenges will stick around.

MR’s words were different from his actions relative to coming and going out of this program. He always espoused how Corvallis and OSU were more important to him than glory, dollars or big time programs. Perhaps he meant that with some level of sincerity. But when he left in ‘98 for the Chargers, left in 2014 for Nebraska and left his ‘consulting’ gig with JS to go coach to the XFL/CFL/AFL (whatever the fock that was short lived), he was always out looking to the horizon.
Yeah BDC setup a sh*tty setting in 2012-14 that drove MR out. I don’t blame Riley for leaving after getting his wings clipped. But MR also gave up in 2014 as the tram declined. He looked like a checked out gomer pile after his big ASU upset that year wearing that OSU winter hat half on his head.
Had BDC given MR the dollars and control to hire the assistants needed and MR had stayed focused, OSU could have seen better years during the time GAG ran it into the ground

You can never assume someone with smarts, drive and enjoys new challenges will stick around. Except Riley was not winning 8-9 games a year. He averaged 4.8 wins per year over his last FIVE years at OSU. Dude was washed up, and his stint at Nebraska further proved it. BDC was right to put the screws to him. And the trainwreck that was GAG doesn't change that fact. Ouch! That hurts. But anyway, 6.3 wpy at Nebraska fwiw.

Ouch! That hurts. But anyway, 6.3 wpy at Nebraska fwiw. So he took a 9+ wins per year program and turned them into a 6.3 wins per year program. Hmmm. He just needed more time lol. Savior Scott Frost agrees.

Mediocre Mike.
The name fits because that’s what he was. .500 record in conference
He had some great years and I love him for those times. And apologists will say that’s above average output at good ole OSU. Context!!!!!
I’ve heard it all. It’s tiresome.
GAG cratered us, but Riley was trending that way too. But, but Decarolis…
All of you would have hired GAG. Every single one of you.
