Curious to me why an established player would leave a team on the rise...gotta be for NIL$$$ I guess its the new 'abnormal' I bear no ill feelings toward Omar, and appreciate all that he did to help our defense to make significant strides the past couple of years. However, I really have mixed feelings about the entire transfer portal and NIL scene. How hypocritical of me given that I’m thrilled to be getting DJU, the O-lineman from Nevada, the Edge rusher from Wyoming and LB from Utah via that source. While I’m not sure of the role of NIL in adding substantial talent to the roster, we definitely have benefited from the transfer portal provision as well. What troubles me most is that from a purist perspective, I would prefer to see the portal limited to players who 1) can’t seem to get on the field in their current situation and are reduced to practice fodder and/clipboard holders on Saturdays as they watch their eligibility slip away, 2) are in a program in which there is a coaching change that turns things upside down, or 3) are in a program that has a very dysfunctional culture and need to escape the toxicity . I struggle with the idea of team leaders and standout players just deciding to pull up stakes and chase another program. I can see a guy moving up from a non-Power 5 conference or lower division to give himself a chance to play against the best and get more exposure among scouts, etc. Omar is not doing a thing “wrong” here, but it would be a lot easier for me if he were leaving to declare for the NFL draft than to go to another college program. There are many reasons that guys feel a need to change, and some are deeply personal (like relating to family) and none of our business, but it hurts to see a significant part of our success this year essentially unfriend (dramatic, I know, but just the feeling it conjures for me a little bit) us a few weeks after celebrating in Allegiant Stadium with us. Nonetheless, I wish him the best, and hope that the move helps him to attain his professional goals. Thanks for your contributions to some really good moments, especially the past two seasons, Omar. Omar is a grad transfer. He could have done the same thing prior to the portal. Everyone is assuming NIL, but he could have other reasons.

Without any insight into the reasoning behind this move, it is very easy to jump to conclusions about the motivation. It just doesn't make sense for a team captain, a multi-year starter, and a defensive anchor to just up and leave a stable and healthy program that is still on the rise.
I am trying hard not to jump to said conclusions, and I'll do my best to reserve judgement until after we see where Omar ends up. But damn, I'm sure not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling right now....

Unlike the nfl where players are under contract with the NIL its free agency for every player every year. This system sucks.

Thanks for your four years, good luck and best to you in the future. Moving to Corvallis altered the course of his life.

I can see grad transfers looking for a place where they can get a master's degree they want and perhaps score some NIL money to help start their life outside football. A five figure deal could provide a down payment on a house, buy an engagement ring and some furniture. I wish him the best.

Everyone was making $$$ except them, everyone could jump ship except for them. I and then my children played amatuer sports...in a field...anyone could walk up and watch for free...snowcones were 25 cents. College football isn't that. And even with that, the kids could leave one league and join another pretty much at will (well, for LL allstars some proof of residency would be required, but as long as the parents moved the kids could move).

After that you sit out a year if you transfer, unless it's as a grad transfer or down to FCS or lower. He did his four years. He graduated. He's been in Corvallis for five years. He's a fringe NFL prospect, so he's probably looking to get paid. He's looking out for his own best interests, not mine or yours.

I'll admit to selfishly wanting Speights to stick around.....sometimes it's difficult to accept players moving on when we, as fans, will be here no matter what. I did not realize he is a grad transfer. Ultimately, I wish him nothing but the best. His contributions to our defense will not be forgotten.

"Approved Waivers" Yes, you can get a waiver, by going through a lengthy NCAA process, which the NCAA has said will be more difficult to get approved going forward. So it is not automatic, unlimited free agency, as implied by the OP.

A five figure deal could provide a down payment on a house, buy an engagement ring and some furniture. I wish him the best. I think Omar is a six figure NIL guy.... based on the few NIL deals I've seen published or confirmed. I'm grateful he came to OSU... I thought he would move on to the NFL but I WONDER IF.... His NFL predraft review was lower than he expected.... He either gets or thinks he can get a six figure NIL deal and possibly play at a top tier program to raise his draft stock. If he doesn't raise his draft stock he still goes to the NFL with more money in his pocket regardless if he makes a team and sticks or doesn't. It all seems very logical IF my assumptions are near reality.... However as fans we are emotionally invested, don't have all the info, and just want our team to be the best it can be. Personally I thought he would leave for the draft, and I've come to realize he kind of has... just one more stop before the draft that makes me jealous as a fan. Best wishes to him, I think he is going to do great!
