So I'm confused...is Omar here or gone? All but gone? He's entered the portal so if what I am reading is correct, apparently the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. He can in theory change his mind and withdraw from the portal, where his scholarship stands would be between him and the coaches/ athletic department I guess.

He's been a very good linebacker since his freshman year. I am sure he is a good teammate and likes the team and coaches. But he is young and not rich. This will be his only opportunity to share in the transfer portal opportunity. I would admire him if he stayed for his last year, but with his stats, he could be in for a big payday. He came to Corvallis as a high school kid and lived with his brother who was a lineman @ OSU. I wish him good luck with his last season, and hope to see him play on Sundays.

Uh, you are wrong also. But you knew that. "Approved Waivers" Yes, you can get a waiver, by going through a lengthy NCAA process, which the NCAA has said will be more difficult to get approved going forward. So it is not automatic, unlimited free agency, as implied by the OP. All of that is correct. The reason for the " NCAA has said will be more difficult to get approved going forward." is because the approval for the last few years has basically been a rubber stamp occurrence. How much more teeth can the NCAA really put into the waiver process. One waiver request can be due to mental health and well being. Do you think the NCAA will try to deny a mental health and well being reason for a 2nd...or 3rd...portal request? Maybe not unlimited free agency as the OP implied. Also surely not as restrictive as you are implying. That was my point.

I have no idea why Speights decided to go into the portal. He could just be testing the waters. He could be looking for a payday. He could be looking to play closer to home. I'll just say that Rommel Mageo decided to play for Mississippi after establishing himself as a starter at LB for the Beavers. And yeah, winning some games was most likely a pretty big draw. But from solely an on-field perspective, it was not beneficial at all. He went from having 87 total tackles, two sacks and two picks in his final season with the Beavers to 44 total tackles, no sacks, no picks at Mississippi. And no NFL takers.

It's more of the grass isn't always greener...but I did specify that it was from an on-field perspective. Some people have speculated that Speights might want to go to the SEC and that sparked the original post.

Didn't T A&M spend a ton of money last year on football recruits? Hasn't Texas A&M lost the most kids in the portal so far? Seems like a weird spot for him to land if he does accept....unless it's a good pile of money I guess?

I was wondering if he was trying to get closer to home. Maybe Va Tech, Virginia, somewhere like that. Apparently that wasn't the case. One thing about it, Omar doesn't owe Oregon State anything. It's unfortunate he's going somewhere else, but I wish nothing but the best for him. Seems like a good dude who will be missed in the program.

That’s for sure. 3 guys who should have been leaders for us in Anderpants’ first year got out of dodge as quickly as possible and headed to the SEC after spring ball when they got a whiff of that rancid regime. Mageo started in the middle for an Ole Miss D that, I believe, was top ten in the nation. Del Rio became the starting QB at Florida, and all Mullaney did was start at WR for National Champion Alabama. That darn Riley just left the cupboard so bare for Anderson. Mageo’s stats may not have been as outstanding there, but I’ll bet that he didn’t regret getting away from a quickly derailing train here.

They also had the top-rated recruiting class last year, yet were the definition of mediocrity this season. I hope things work out for Omar wherever he lands. I appreciate what he did here, but won’t go out of my way to watch him play for someone else on Saturdays next fall. That’s not a reflection on him, but just necessary for me to not get bummed out when I see him in a different college jersey. It was hard enough watching Marcus McMaryion, and I was 100% behind him moving on with the way he was treated by the coaches here.
