I have no idea why Speights decided to go into the portal. He could just be testing the waters. He could be looking for a payday. He could be looking to play closer to home. I'll just say that Rommel Mageo decided to play for Mississippi after establishing himself as a starter at LB for the Beavers. And yeah, winning some games was most likely a pretty big draw. But from solely an on-field perspective, it was not beneficial at all. He went from having 87 total tackles, two sacks and two picks in his final season with the Beavers to 44 total tackles, no sacks, no picks at Mississippi. And no NFL takers. Is it possible that this is purely an NIL negotiating tactic and he can return to OSU if the NIL collective matches his offers elsewhere?

Lol. “According to the NCAA Transfer Portal Database, 1,427 FBS players entered the portal in calendar year 2021. Forty-two percent of those did not find a new home and 4% withdrew from the portal. Of the 54% that did manage to find a new home, 13% wound up below the FBS or even the FCS.”

Few in the portal are all league players.

Not always a tactic, sometimes it's just figuring out options. Option 1: Draft (anywhere from 4th round to UDFA), Option 2: transfer to a top program to improve stock and get paid. Option 3: Stay at OSU and try to improve stock for draft, NIL probably can't compete. Until he actually commits somewhere or declares for the draft he isn't gone.

Players can pull from the portal and their scholarship will still be honored unless it was dropped prior to them entering the portal. If Omar wants to pull out of the portal there is no freaking way we don't let him back on the roster.

He has good stats, played on a 10-3 team and was first team all-Pac-12. Is his 40 time going to improve by playing elsewhere (or staying here)? As I said before, the only thing that potentially improves his draft stock is his combine numbers.

If he could play at the same level in the SEC or BIG10 it would up his stock.

They aren't asking if a player can play in the SEC, they're looking at a player's football IQ and physical tools and how those translate to the NFL level. Again, the NFL combine numbers will either send Speights to a higher round or they won't. There might be questions about players in the FCS or even conferences like the MWC. But Speights just finished a season in which the Beavers played two top-10 ranked teams in Washington and Utah, No. 12 USC, No. 15 Oregon and No. 24 Fresno State. And played in the Pac-12 with, but did not play, No. 21 UCLA. Pretty sure the NFL teams already have a good grasp of Speights as a potential NFL linebacker.

Obviously if Omar decides not to transfer he would be welcomed back with open arms — and scholarship intact. But I don’t think a school is required to hold a scholarship for a player that enters the portal. Does OSU have an their own internal policy that is different?

NCAA recommends universities hold it for the current academic term. They don't HAVE to do anything or welcome an athlete back. In a case like Omar he's gonna be fine. If you become a school that drops scholarships and forces players out 'unfairly' it does make notable reputation issues in recruiting. Oregon has this reputation for track since the 90's and it has hurt them in recruiting before. They are a Tier 1 track program so they are still competitive and win alot but they could have been much better if they had a supportive reputation instead of a plug and play one.

Is it odd that he hasn't decided on a landing spot yet? The window is closing soon...

Is it odd that he hasn't decided on a landing spot yet? The window is closing soon... The window doesn’t close for player transfers or admissions, just for more players to get on the transfer list. Once you’re on you’re good to go as long as a school will accept your admission.
