In today's climate it must be said that a loyal player won't run through the portal for you.

In today's climate it must be said that a loyal player won't run through the portal for you. Axiom Change, 5-star linebacker, has signed with Oregon State Seriously, there are exceptions to this but generally, yeah.

In today's climate it must be said that a loyal player won't run through the portal for you. Loyalty has little to do with it anymore. Perhaps that's better. It is a business and the kids have to figure out the best path for their own future. Yes, it hurts when a player leaves the program, but we have also received some good players.

As a parent of three adult/ children it was always stressed to give them choices; for trial and error is the greatest teacher IMO

For all the hand wringing, seems to me so far that the portal has given more to OSU than it’s taken away.

What percentage of players does the portal even come into play for? Let's not lose sight of the fact, the vast majority are loyal to coaches and programs who are loyal to them.
Just because a player does enter the portal, money or loyalty may have zero to do with it. Playing time opportunity, looking for a better fit, family circumstances changed, homesick, got off on wrong foot with current coach, graduate program offerings, walked into bad situation to begin with or fed a lot of false promises on recruiting trail, etc....
The small percentage of players who are chasing NIL this time of year get the vast majority of fan/media notice.
JS and staff deal honestly and up front with players along with excelling at developing player skill, team mentality, and football IQ. That word gets out and good players serious about continuing their career into the pros, and unhappy elsewhere, will strongly consider Beaver football for those reasons. .

We gained a ton more from the portal than we lost. We lost one starter...a solid linebacker. We have had many of those type of players in the past 20ish years...Barnett,Allen,Ellison,Robinson,Bray,Pollard,Seigler,Alexander,Roberts,LaRocque, Doggett, etc. I'm not saying we won't miss Speights, but I think we will be o.k. there. Mascarenas,Miller, and Tufaga should be solid.
Getting a proven QB in D.J.,Starck will likely be a day one starter,Omotosho is a legit edge rusher,Tufaga was stuck behind some very good ones at MLB at Utah, and Terry will be far more productive at osu than Cal or high school. He has terrific potential.
In addition,we aren't done adding kids likely. This portal ends on the 18th,and the second one opens up after spring drills. We will likely add players at that point and add some too. It's only January.

While this is true, football is very much about continuity. It is a TEAM sport. The Beavs have shown that to be true. The old Pat Casey gem "I don't need the best players. I need the right players", could potentially mean more in the college football world as kids are moving all over the place, at the drop of a hat.
