What are you talking about? I thought you were talking about Erickson.

I served him and his staff an f-ton of Bud talls at the Timeout. Wasn’t that the same place? If not, where was the timeout? I just remember playing golf behind DE’s group and the beer cans falling out of the cart. Had to look it up....yes it is. Used to be in front of the Jason Inn. Tom Conners owned it I believe.....and had Paul Kagowa running the bar. I think I was the first non-Hawaiian to pour for him. That was a bit of a cobweb cleaning for my brain to do.

What are you talking about? I thought you were talking about Erickson. The tequila probably made me incoherent last night. I, unfortunately, wasn't around for the Erickson years. Never saw Niner play.

My cousin coached with Dennis Erickson's son once upon a time and got to spend some time with Dennis. When the microphone was not on, Dennis mentioned that he really regretted leaving Oregon State. He also lamented that Cesca cost him a Championship. Although his phraseology included more four-letter words. To me,it wasn't Cesca who cost Dennis a national title. It was the player who missed a block on that second down play at Husky stadium against Larry Triplett. The first down play got 5-6 yards by Simonton, if I recall and the second down play was a loss. Get a first down on that drive it likely wouldn't of come down to the Cesca field goal Miss.

Housh caught a pass and had a first down on that drive, but he fumbled when tackled and the ball went about three yards backward, where we recovered. That left a second-and-short and Simonton got blown up.
Our defense played badly that night. We made some adjustments for Tuiasasopo (SP) and they did not work, would have been IOK with our base defense.
Don't forget the field goal would only have tied the game. We'd still have needed to win in OT.

I think him going to San Francisco was a mistake...S.F. had salary cap issues which made it very difficult to win big at a place that expects to win big. Winning at Miami is expected. As beaver fans, how special was it when you turn something around at a place who hadn't had success in almost 30 years? Nothing like it the way people are so thankful to coach Erickson for having big success. Of course,Mike Riley recruited some of those kids, but Dennis added some elite pieces that made a Fiesta Bowl season possible.

As Henry Skrimshander said, on 1st & 10, Smitty hit Housh for a first down, but Housh fumbled backwards to eat up the final timeout and set up the 2nd & 1. The 2nd & 1 was a slow-developing draw play to the left. It looked like Martin Mauer was supposed to cut back and seal the edge, but he fell down. That left Robert Sykes one-on-one with two-time All-American and three-time All-Pac-10 Larry Triplett. If the design of the play was really to leave Sykes on an island with Triplett, it was a stupid play. You can't really blame Sykes. I guess that you could blame Mauer, but why?

I just know that on second and short on a potential game winning drive,a block was missed. I remember how good Triplett was. I have no idea who missed the block. Was it a bad play call? I don't know. It's just hard to blame Cesca for missing a game tying field goal for me.

Cesca was an odd bird. Was a decent kicker who still missed a lot of big kicks.
Horrible in the Oahu Bowl, 1-for-4 I think? Missed vs. Washington. Missed a FG and PAT in 2000 Civil War. Missed twice vs. USC in the fourth quarter in 2001. He makes one of those, we go 6-5 and play in a bowl.
He was nails in the Fiesta Bowl. But by mid-season 2001 he was awful and was replaced by Yliniemi, who was a much better kicker and one of the best in school history.

The crazy thing about Erickson and the Fiesta Bowl win is that season still has an impact on the OSU program today. Smith has used it as an example that Oregon State can be successful in football and it helped him rebuild the program.

I was just saying what my cousin said DE's takeaway was. I get it. Personally I think the blame is misplaced but what do I know? I personally blame DE. Smitty asked him for a third down play, just in case, and DE told him not to worry, because Simonton would get the yard. Cesca was a pretty week link, though, on an otherwise stellar team.

I was so crushed when they lost to USC with a chance to break the Coliseum streak. After that I didn't think I would live to see it. Thank you Chance Nolan!!!
