So here we are halfway through the season, and I am convinced that Seth Collins, while an amazing athlete and a gifted runner, is not the QB of the future...
I believe Seth is the guy to lead the beavs for the rest of the year, but he shouldn't get too comfy there in the starters role.
With Darrell Garretson waiting in the wings and Mason Moran coming in, I would be willing to bet we see the JC transfer start next year and the incoming freshman back him up before taking over in his sophomore year.
If I was Seth I would buy some receiver gloves in the offseason... Dude is a serious athlete and could be our next Timmy Alexander!
What do you all think?

I tend to agree with your overall thought. One clarification..... Are you saying Garreston would be the starter next year? He isn't a JC kid, he transferred from Utah State. www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/05/darell_garretson_former_utah_s_1.htmlI think the bigger question is "IF" that happens will Seth be content to stay as a back up or move to another position? He too could transfer at that time. I like the kid and his running ability, he just needs to become a better passer. Stepping in after Sean is also a tall task.

not only passing but GA mentioned he made some bad decisions on handing the ball to RB as well. It will be interesting to see who wins the starting spot next season.

I'm disappointed that Seth hasn't progressed more than he has now that we're six games in. Really like his athleticism obviously and am actually OK with his throwing ability. The concern, as has been pointed out by many, is a perceived inability to make his way through his progressions and also what seems to be an inability to "read" while running the read option. Just not seeing him improve in knowing when to hand off and when to keep - kind of like the guy driving to the hoop that might fake a pass to a teammate but you just know he's keeping it and taking it to the basket every time.
I really hope the light suddenly turns on for Seth - like this Saturday - and we get our RB's going on the ground, which of course can make everything else work better. If he doesn't get better, then we hold on for the ride and look forward to Garretson next year I think.

Seth is a crazy good athlete and I think he is doing all he can to help the team this season but I will be shocked if he is the starter next year. His arm strength is fine and most of the time he throws a decent long ball, but his short and medium passes are an adventure and I have yet to see him work through his progressions even when he has time. I think he could be a really good receiver and would be great running the fly sweep, but I also know he really wants to play QB so I guess we will see what happens next season.

Decision making is crucial. I heard the last scrimmage Garretson looked natural in the offense. A long ways to next year but we can all be sure there will be a QB battle.
Also Nick might play this weekend/

Seth is a half a season removed from being a high school QB. Seems to me it was 3-4 seasons before many on the old board were able to admit players like Carson Palmer and a host of other QBs who have had long Pro careers at the position were decent QBs. I look at this season as just being the start of his journey. He showed growth for 3-4 straight games, which actually surprised me, then regressed a bit the last couple of games. The whole offense is still picking it up. Garret son may very well be the QB next year, or not, but I'm not writing off Seth for the future.

Maybe I'm drunk and stoopid too?

Why is everyone so willing to be patient with Collins? For years, Beaver fans have been up in arms about the length of time it takes to get a QB "up to speed" in the offense. Yet now, we are OK with letting a guy develop on the job? Andersen wants a QB that can attack the D with his legs, arm, and mind - but Collins as far as I can tell only has one of those right now, and he's getting more and more banged up as the season progresses. The coaching staff is in a tough spot with him, because I feel like benching him is not going to motivate him, rather it will have a pretty negative effect. He was adamant about being a QB out of high school, so the idea that he's going to willingly switch to another position to maximize his talents seems like a stretch at this point.

Yet now, we are OK with letting a guy develop on the job? My opinion is that with Riley it is a different argument as he had the same offense for a long time ... installed, and with back up QB's in the system that should have been developed as time went on. In Andersen's case, it a completely different offense -- with only freshman QBs available -- none with a single game day snap under their belt as well. Not sure you're comparing apples and apples here.

Two things are potentially in play here. 1. He is the best option we have right now so they are sticking with him. 2. He has the potential to be better in the future but isn't the best option right now so they are sticking with him so he learns and is better in the future. My guess is the answer is somewhere in between. There isn't anyone eligible that is considerably better than Collins right now but there might be someone is who marginally better. My guess is the coaching staff believes Collins has the upside to be better in this system long term and are willing to throw him into the fire so he learns. I think if there was a considerably better choice, they would go with it but if the differences are marginal, they are going with the guy who has the greatest upside for the future. I think if the transfer was eligible, he would be playing as he would be a considerable upgrade from the reports we have heard.

Our spring game 2016 will go a long ways to sorting things out. For just half a season of experience and facing a quality lineup of Pac-12 teams, Collins seems to be where he should be at this stage. What has me worried is our D considering the DC we have on staff. It has underperformed more often than not.
In any case, we are getting better recruits later on, the current group of players is accumulating experience and at some point we will hit a critical mass of talent and experience to become one of the Pac-12 teams in the hunt. 2016? 2017? Injuries and fluke plays will have their say in what the season record is. So long as the trend is for improved performances I'll call it good while not forgetting that the rest of the conference is a bunch of tough cookies who are just getting tougher.

Mason Moran is a stud and could be hard to red shirt but if we can keep him, even after his recruiting blows up by the end of this season, and strengthen him for a year he could be something special. He looks to have all three of Andersen's desired traits plus heart and leadership ability. Also if we can get a solid O line in there and a sneaky balanced run game (power and speed), I think this offense could mold into exactly what Baldwin and Andersen have envisioned.
