I have enjoyed watching the 1-AA playoffs for many years and I know why: because it is a true playoff. Sixteen teams. It is exciting when every game matters to the end. 1-A has been missing the boat for way too long and they still are. They're close with twelve teams but why not just make it 16? They must know that they will at some point. Lame. Why miss the revenue of having 16? Whatever. I'll still be watching the 1-AA playoff and now, the 1-A playoff.
I have no connection to any 1-AA team. The closest would be that my stepbrother went to Sacramento State for his undergrad. But I can't stand my stepbrother and I am pretty sure (and hope) that the feeling is mutual. F(orget) him. He's not into football anyway so my antipathy towards him doesn't even make me root against Sac. St.
Being a citizen of the West, I root for Big Sky teams (including Sac. St.) in the 1-AA tournament. It's been a good year as the Big Sky racked up some excellent wins in this year's tournament. And now, here we sit: the championship game today at 11:00 am PST, Montana against powerhouse South Dakota St. Go Grizz!
And here's why I'm sharing my thoughts on this subject on this board: My enjoyment of the 1-AA playoff is a factor that leaves me with no worries about OSU's future. I just want to see good, competitive sports and I find that in the 1-AA playoff. I also find it in almost every sport OSU plays. One reason I have loved the Pac 12 Network is because I have had opportunity to watch OSU in so many sports that I normally would not have had the ability to see. To me, losing the Pac 12 Network will be the worst effect of realignment.
I know many people don't feel that way. I know many people feel that we (the OSU community) will have lost something huge if we slip to G5. But I don't. I was on board with next year's football schedule the moment it was released. I think we will only have lost something huge if our athletic department dissolves completely, and I don't see that happening. So between my enjoyment of the 1-AA playoff and my enjoyment of OSU sports in general, I have great faith that I will be enjoying OSU sports in the future, no matter the level. Where OSU ends up, I'll be watching.

I don't think the world would end if OSU and WSU wound up in the Pac-2/MWC. The Beavers would still play football and the other sports.
But like it or not, this is about money. OSU has been operating with a certain budget (and that includes the ability to build and pay for facilities, staff, etc.) and that budget will have to be cut significantly if the Pac-2 can't figure out a way to either create a so-called "power" conference or at the very least something very close. Or join an existing power conference.
There is no way the Pac-2 will recoup that money by joining with the MWC. The media deal just won't be enough. I know some posters disagree with this. But look at the facts: the current media payout for the MWC per team is $4 million. The Big 12 is 31.5 million, give or take a hundred thousand. The ACC is about $33 million per school. Then it goes (way) up for the SEC and Big Ten.
IMO, landing a comparable media deal for a reverse-merged Pac-2/MWC is far more unlikely than the chances the Pac-2 will land in some sort of power conference situation.
If there's no other option, then so be it.
And, yes, go Montana!

When the going gets really tough, they can't win outside of Missoula.
