India landed but equipment failed, Same for Japan. US did a self destruct before trying to land.

India landed and the equipment worked for a bit, but something appears to have happened during the lunar night (something probably froze), which rendered them inoperable thereafter. The United States had a propellant leak, probably from a valve that failed to close. I thought that everything was still working on the Japan lander.

Solar panels failed on the Japan attempt..meaning once the batteries die..so does the lander. Russia had a crash landing too.. I think they need to ditch the computers and pull out some slide rules.! How did we do this in the 60's/70's? Are the aliens coming and the moon is the meeting place ?

The solar panels are not working currently, but there is a chance that the Moon's rotation will correct the problem. How did we do this back in the 60s? We didn't use solar panels. Outer space is the one place, where fuel does not increase the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, but, for some reason, it is the one place, where we insist on using solar panels. "Ask yourself why an antenna won't deploy on a deep-space probe, or ask how they could launch a $6 billion telescope without testing its mirror."--one of the aliens in "The Arrival."

Fuel is heavy and finite (at least on board a rocket). Solar allows for a lighter craft and, maybe in the future, the ability to travel a lot further than fuel.

Solar very well might be the future of space travel. It just does not appear to be the present.

I'm going deep in my memory banks but i've had a couple of beers. Anyway, Carl Sagan wrote in some book, that there was a treaty against using nuclear power in space. His point was something like there is no better use of a nuclear engine than to propel yourself to 99% of the speed of light.

The Outer Space Treaty does not prohibit nuclear power in space, as long as such power us used for "peaceful purposes." The Voyagers and Cassini-Huygens all used nuclear power. The Cassini-Huygens probe was faulted for the use of nuclear power, because it used a near-Earth flyby (728 miles above the surface of the planet) as a gravity assist.
