I'd hope the Raiders had no interest whatsoever in Nix. I do think they would have chose Penix. But they massively scored just taking BPA. 3 QBs in top 5. IIRC there has been just 3 QBs to win superbowl picked in top 5 the past 25 years. Two are named Manning. Falcons threw a grenade in the room with that doozy of a decision. Vikings were big on Penix for sure. I agree Raiders would of taken Penix, but he wasn't making it past Vikings. They panic traded to move up to lock McCarthy after the surprise move. As for Fuaga, maybe a small tumble, I think he was closer to the #2 tackle than the #4, but hard to really call going #14 a fall. I think in tackles the reach was Tennessee taking Latham. that was a reach, particularly for a guy that probably will be a better guard in the NFL than tackle. Latham is pretty average in pass pro. Latham was projected more of a late 1st maybe even high 2nd player... not the overall #7 pick. Yeah, I agree on Latham. I think Tennessee took the wrong guy (yes, I saw Fuaga a lot more but I know enough about Latham to believe that Fuaga was the better choice for what the Titans need). As for the Penix pick, I think the Falcons should be praised for thinking outside the box here. It's funny to me that people don't really blink an eye when six of the first 12 picks are quarterbacks but act like the Falcons are crazy for taking one along with signing Cousins. For all we know, Penix could be the best of the bunch (it wouldn't surprise me all that much). You've got an aging star level guy coming in off an injury. You might get 2-3 good seasons out of Cousins before he starts to fade. Those seasons allow Penix to learn behind Cousins and then he should be good to go. Yeah, it sounds good on paper. But everything is 'on paper' when it comes to the draft.

Where did Walt Frazier go to college? Why not Josh Allen? A little more contemporary. Because of bdudbeaver’s avatar!

The 6 qb's taken in the top 12 played hobnob with the early picks. 14th is no mean feat. The Falcons really hosed the Raiders who were hoping to take 1 of those QB’s. Weird pick considering you just signed Cousins. Any day the Raider’s get hosed is a good day. Typically they do it to themselves!

But everything is 'on paper' when it comes to the draft. I think the knocks are you took basically the oldest QB available knowing he would sit for at least two years. You took the guy most pundits and scouts say was the most pro-ready player out of the gate, fully intending on sitting him. There is certainly proven value in taking a QB high and sitting him Rodgers of course, but most recently the guy that replace him in Love and even Mahomes sat basically a full year. but in this CBA era the value of a rookie QB is his contract. you are getting the most important position in football for as cheap as you will ever get him, use that money on the rest of the team before you can't. Green Bay didn't think they'd sit Love 3 years. they thought they'd sit him one year after Rodgers showed signs of slowing down. Rodgers just came out going back to back MVP and changed all that. Falcons have basically assured Penix he will sit for two, barring injury. That and it is the fundamental question of if QB was the need right now today. Cousins is 35 coming off a big injury. Maybe... but if he heals up well, Cousins probably has his current contract in him, meaning Falcons really could of waited a year or two, or ideally filled immediate needs in round 1 (or trade back to fill more needs with picks) and grabbed a developmental guy in round 2/3 like Rattler, Michael Pratt, or Jordan Travis

You have your QB that can help you win now but one who is going to be 36 before the start of this season. Instead of waiting with fingers crossed that you will have a shot at a top QB in the draft once it's evident that Cousins is done or close to done, you grab one now. Yes, the contract time will be ticking but that obviously did not outweigh the Falcons' need to get the QB situation as set as possible for the short and long term.
