Sounds depressing. Thank God they sell beer. Vs Idaho St there well be no real indicator of progress. They're terrible. OSU should be able to run for 250+, and throw whenever they want. Anything less than 40+ points, 450 total yards would be disjointed even going 2,3 deep if the score gets out of hand.

Sounds depressing. Thank God they sell beer. I think it's probably good to dial down expectations for the season. I know I have. My hope is that our defense is as good as advertised, and we can pound the rock. You can build on that.

Our new reality for talent acquisition is that if our success depends on the QB we are cooked. There's maybe 30 QBs every season that can truly put the game on their shoulders week after week. We're not going to get those guys very often. If our identity isn't LOS control, fast defense and running the ball we're straight screwed.
We have to lean on team aspects of football wher execution and communication are key. If we need to Johnny Football our way through games with a few ultra talented players then we are cooked.

McCoy has been listed as the starter for Week 1. Seems like a complete surprise. What are the chances all three guys get reps on Saturday?

Not sure if they changed DC or schemes, but they don't have the talent to blitz and control gaps. Plus they were next to last in FCS in run D. The top 4 RBs will all see time and I'm hoping (2) get 80+ yds, and the other (2) 50+. If our OL is remotely P4 level there should be several longer runs. Idaho St has been bad for a long time and adding "daddy" Hawkins will not make a huge difference.

You make me nervous when you say "if our OL is remotely P4 level"... if that's still a question then, eh... not sure that's good. Granted, we've never seen them play as a unit. I would still love if people saw them practice/scrimmage and say very positive things about them.

Idaho St has been bad for a long time and adding "daddy" Hawkins will not make a huge difference. Idaho State's head coach is Cody Hawkins, who was a quarterback for Colorado during Dan Hawkins' entire tenure at Colorado. If the identical surnames did not tip you off, Cody Hawkins is the son of Dan Hawkins. For those unfamiliar with Dan Hawkins, Dan was the head coach at Willamette, Boise State, and Colorado from 1993-2010 (with three years as Boise's OC mixed in). Josh Runda is the DC. He was a Defensive Quality Control Assistant at Iowa State from 2021-2022. Iowa State ranked ninth in total defense in 2021, allowing only two teams to gain 350 yards. Idaho State, like Iowa State for Runda's two years, runs a 3-3-5. Results with a brand new 3-3-5 have been poor for Idaho State so far. In 2023, Idaho State was last in the Big Sky in scoring defense, ypg, and passing defense and second-to-last in rushing defense, interceptions, sacks, and fourth down conversions. Idaho State was also third-to-last in third-down defense. and red zone defense. The only real positive stat for the defense is fumble recoveries, fifth-best in the Big Sky. That said, 2023 was kind of a tear-down and rebuild year for the defense. Idaho State returns all 11 defensive starters from last year, including All-Big Sky safety, Calvin Pitcher; All-Big Sky defensive tackle, David Rowe (some publications have Rowe as high as the second-best defensive lineman in all of FCS behind only North Dakota State's Eli Mostaert); sack leader Cortland Horton; and defensive lineman, Logan George, who will probably be All-Big Sky this year. They also added two Mountain West defensive linemen transfers in Maku Tu-Akoi (Utah State) and Louie Cresto (Nevada). On the offensive side of the ball, Idaho State is FCS' #1 passing team, averaging more than 330 ypg. They achieved that with two different quarterbacks splitting time, Jordan Cooke and Hunter Hays. Both return in 2024. Cooke was more of the 1A to Hays' 1B last year. Six of the 11 starters on offense return, but Idaho State did lose two of their best three wide receivers. The only starting receiver to return is Christian Frederickson. Jeff Weimer from UNLV is expected to take a second receiver spot. And Alfred Jordan is expected to take a third. Justice Jackson (Eastern Washington) or Hunter Roddy (Army) is expected to start at running back. Idaho State returns two offensive linemen in Alex Ramirez at center and Jaedon Garcia at guard. After that, they look like they are relying on transfers--Stryker Rashid (Utah Tech), Jake Hellman (Utah State), and Brady Phillips (Air Force)--to fill out the line. Idaho State gave San Diego State a scare last year, losing 36-28 at Snapdragon Stadium. San Diego State did not put the game away until they fell on an onside kick with 35 seconds left. I am curious to see how it all comes together for Idaho State this year. A lot of great returning pieces and transfers. If Oregon State does not take Idaho State seriously, Idaho State might be competing well into the fourth quarter.

Idaho State led FCS in both yards and interceptions. 22. Hays was better at ball control. More touchdowns and fewer interceptions. But he was not as explosive as Cooke with Cooke producing a lot more yards. The pair combined for 21 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Three other interceptions were by the third- and fourth-string quarterbacks. And one interception was on a gimmick throw by Frederickson. Frederickson did not throw a second time.

Yeah... because the '22 Vegas bowl opponent resembled the '23 ND Sun Bowl opponent in quality of competition. Ben may start vs OSU's worst opponent of the year. But he'll not be the starter long. Florida's offense in the LV Bowl was crud, but their defense was not. Florida's defense was fast and athletic and they shut down a lot of OSU's runs that looked like they were going to break for good yardage. They held OSU to its second lowest ypc average of the season. Gulbranson played a good game with 189 yards on 17/26 passing. No picks. 1 td. Solid game against a good defense.

Have zero idea where you think the 6-7 FL defense was good? #102 in Def ypp #128 in Def 3rd down % That was with their best player and leader who opted out with 20 other players. They had athletes, they were never good.
