I am not trying to be snide. I just found it hilarious that you are looking for consistency in the very sporadic game of football. Surely this season has shown that often what we expect to happen does not. It shows every week that almost any team can make another team look like a fool. So with the inconsistent nature of this football season I am satisfied that the team had at least average performances in every game minus the one. I almost choked on my drink when you said improvement could be only measured with much more consistency (my words not yours). From a different vantage point doesn't it sound ironic/humorous. Not snide or snide... "consistency" is the goal of every athlete/team no matter the sport. I'm not sure what sports or measuring stick you are used to using, but performing at a high level is one thing, to keep performing at a high level on a regular basis is the goal to become a successful/winning program... The goal is to not be made to look foolish... and unless you are consistent in your performance you AREN'T IMPROVING. Not really sure what your definitions of a improving team, but it surely isn't inconsistency?? Not at all choking here... You can't take 1 step ahead and 2 back... play a decent game versus inferior opponent, get blown out and look terrible the next. Improvement in a program is all about making marked improvements and becoming consistent is sustaining them no matter the sport... or business... or life. You are right we have to measure something. Obviously we would want to haveconsistency in measuring that something. So surely you would agree that the team has consistently shown improvement from last year:). Consistency in any other facet can be argued or discounted, but when the score differential shrinks and sometimes flips it consistently shows something.

Consistency in any other facet can be argued or discounted, but when the score differential shrinks and sometimes flips it consistently shows something. Personally I never measure team vs team from different years. It is completely apples to oranges... 1st year if a system, different schedules, different players, and on and on. You can look at implementation and coaching somewhat... are we technically better/teaching so players understand and can play "free"... but even that is suspect this year in comparison. Hence, to me the only thing you can look at is the current team as they progress thru the current year. To me both the offense and defense are below average at best. Very inconsistent in player development and understanding. Couple that with what I see as very suspect play calling/sequencing the offense is VERY disappointing. Indeed part of this conversation does include last year's team in that you expect to see some areas of marked improvements in year 2, while others are still "growing". Others use stat comparisons. Again I find that a crutch (as I quoted in Vin Scully thread and some else in another) whether in support or in attack. Stats from year to year are little use to most who seek "illumination" as Vin would say. Not only are they based on a different team playing a different schedule at differing points of development, "ranking" such stats are again invalid as they too involve the 127 other teams... different teams that played a different schedule. I see no MARKED improvements in any area overall and several areas are status quo, with others worse. Now there have been improvements (OL DB) but not what I'd like to see as markedly improved thru the 1st 6 games.
