Any ideas for how Beaver Nation can convince Andersen to hire Jonathan Smith as our Offensive Coordinator after this season is over... if not sooner? Jonathan had something really special when he was a student-athlete at Oregon State. He wasn't a very big guy... just as a human being, not a football player, as he stood a mere 5' 8" and weighed 170 pounds soaking wet... he didn't have an amazing arm, and he wasn't very fast, but somehow he was one hell of a college quarterback. He looked like just an average guy... in fact, when Dennis Erickson first became head coach he told Smith to go grab him something thinking he was one of the team managers. Erickson was shocked to find out he was one of the quarterbacks... yet alone, THE quarterback.
Jonathan Smith may not have had the measurables you look for in a quarterback... but he had enough guts and brains to make up for it, and then some... and then a whole lot more on top of that. Dennis Erickson, a national championship winning coach, said that Smith was the only player he'd ever coached who knew as much, or more about the game than he did. He said back in 2000 that Smith would one day be one of the best football coaches in the country. And its looking like he may end up being right about that as Smith has been a key piece in turning around the Washington football program, bringing them from the cellar all the way to a top 4 national rating in a very short amount of time.
I was hoping that Mike Riley would've hired Smith a long time ago... and help bring him along, teaching him the ropes of how to be a college football coach while working at his alma mater. But it didn't happen... instead, Smith bounced around the nation, working his way up the coaching latter for a number of different programs and coaches. He was lucky because he got to learn from a bunch of really successful coaches... most recently Chris Peterson at both Boise State (where he was the QB coach and co-offensive coordinator) and now Washington (offensive coordinator).
It's just a matter of time before he gets picked up by someone who wants to give him a shot at being a head coach. That very well could happen after this season... especially of Washington continues to have the kind of success they've had the first half of the season.
My understanding was that Smiths dream is to one day be the head coach at Oregon State. That isn't going to happen for a while... he probably needs at least 3-4 more years as a major college offensive coordinator before he's ready to be the Beavers head coach. If he were to get the OC job at Oregon State, there's a pretty decent chance he'd be okay with staying around for a while rather than taking a HC position at a smaller school. I don't know about the rest of you guys... but I think Oregon State could use an improvement at OC.
Now is the time to go get him too... he just got a HUGE slap in the face from Peterson over the off-season. Peterson gave all of his assistant coaches at least 2 year contracts... except for Jonathan Smith who just got a 1 year contract. Andersen should offer him a deal to come to Oregon State... a nice long contract. I bet he'd take it. And I honestly believe we'd have a high powered offense like Washington does within a year.

I admit I didn't get past your first line, but no. This idea that keeps popping up here is ridiculous. He's OC of the #4 team in the country! Why on God's Green Earth would anybody leave a position like that to come to the grease fire that is the OSU offense? It defies logic. His next move is up, not down for sentimental reasons. Maybe someday...maybe, he would be interested in returning as HEAD Coach, if it was available. Because more than likely he'll have to start out at a smaller, lesser known school like Arkansas St, Directional Michigan, etc. Let's get realistic here and drop the JS back as OC.

Dang... Smith keeps getting smaller over the years. Couple more years from now we will look back and say he was 5'2" 140 lbs. But with MOXIE.

Petersen really did slap Johnny Smith in the face this offseason: "Now is the time to go get him too... he just got a HUGE slap in the face from Peterson over the off-season. Peterson gave all of his assistant coaches at least 2 year contracts... except for Jonathan Smith who just got a 1 year contract." To add to that, Smith is one of the lowest paid members of the UW staff... He is pulling in $425,000/yr. The secondary coach is making more than Smith. Smith is the most tenuous cog in the #4 machine up there. Heck. I would wager if we offered him big Sitake money (anything north of $600,000K) and made it multi-year. he would be packing his back. you cannot tell me with a straight face Andersen would not like to have the UW offense down here. It is magnificent, a spread offense, with read-option elements and a down field passing attack. a beautiful blend of pro and spread elements really.

I figure in two or three years, if UW keeps this up, he'll get a shot as a HC at a mid-level school somewhere, or a parallel move to NU under Riley when Langsdorf gets his own program.

I wonder if there is more too that, i.e. maybe JS made it clear he wanted to keep his options open, or perhaps they both agreed it was time for JS to spread his wings. This is his 5th year with Petersen, they were breaking in a lot of new kids last year if I recall. It is unusual that a coordinator is one of the lowest paid guys on the staff. Petersen doesn't seem like the type to play games with his coaching staff. But hey, I'm all in if OS wants to throw him a pile of cash to resurrect this anemic offense. And maybe be HC in waiting, although I won't be surprised if Boise State goes after him this year if Harsin moves on. That will be a big win for BS, Harsin is going to get exposed bigly once he has to coach big boy Power 5 football. Who knows, maybe Oregon will hire him...he's a perfect fit to keep Helfrich's tradition going.

I actually did read it, just added that for effect. I think JS is smarter than to say "I'll show CP for not extending my contract! I'll take a giant step down that could kill my career!" I don't think so. Petersen would have been questioned for extending JS much longer, as his struggles as OC have been well documented. I think it could have easily been a "show me" move. If so, it seems to have paid off handsomely. Not only does it not make sense, but in case folks haven't noticed CGA doesn't seem overly enamored with anything associated with Coach Riley, save Coach Brennan. These coaches keep a book on potential assistants at every position, just in case. I don't have any knowledge of who CGA keeps in his back pocket but so far it seems to be all Utah/Utah St connections, not OSU.

Does no else here recall how up until this year, UW fans wanted Smith fired because their offense was horrible? They go out and get a high level QB give him a year to adjust to and learn CFB and all of a sudden their offense is good. Imagine that, a good QB makes an offense go. Who would have thought such a crazy thing...?
I am all for JS coming back to OSU. But, if you think he's going to jump ship to OSU and all of a sudden our offense is going to be amazing with him calling the plays, you're crazy. Unless he's bringing a Jake Browning with him OSU's offense will not resemble what UW is doing right now. With our current group of QBs
There are legit, football reasons why JS was only given 1yr from Peterson. If he opts to stay with UW it's very likely he'll get a raise and a LT contract.

Does no else here recall how up until this year, UW fans wanted Smith fired because their offense was horrible? Bingo. Additionally, UW brought in Jeff Tedford for this season to look over the shoulder of Smith as "Offensive Conultant." I don't think anyone outside the program knows who is calling the plays. Even if Smith is calling the plays the fact that Tedford is there as a leaves a shadow of doubt to Smith's abilities. They go out and get a high level QB give him a year to adjust to and learn CFB and all of a sudden their offense is good. So through OSU's website, you can see exactly what everyone at the university is making (I'm assuming these are base salaries.)
TJ Woods: $375K Kevin McGiven $375K Dave Baldwin $250K
I was unaware that Baldwin's salary had been cut from previously reported numbers.

It also stands to reason maybe he isn't gone after this season if he took a massive pay cut to be a position coach. interesting.

Dang... Smith keeps getting smaller over the years. Couple more years from now we will look back and say he was 5'2" 140 lbs. But with MOXIE. When message boards were young I remember this extremely paraphrased exchange with a fan of another team. Smith was listed at 5'11, but on a media release from this other team, one of the "1"s was left off and he was listed at 5'1". So the opposing fan was asking in genuine curiosity how did we scheme for a 5'1" qb. Did he always roll out? Was there some special blocking arrangement so balls were not batted down by D-linemen's guts? It was funny.

I stand 6-0 in flip flops and I towered over him up close. He really was about my Dad's height (5-7) or maybe a hair taller. I was friends with a couple of his roommates his soph/junior season at the house he lived at on Kings - he would come in with a big stack of game film and head up to his room. Always studying. What he was not, was small. JS had been working just as hard in the weight room as he was in the film room, and eating right. He was a solid 190-200 pounds without a single doubt. I think they had him listed at around 205 his senior season and I believe it.
