haha was it last year or year before Johnathan Smith was husky fan punching bag?
Yes and Petersen stuck with him because he knew his potential. Petersen has been and been around enough successful OC's to recognize one when he sees one.
Why do you think that Petersen brought in Tedford this year as an offensive consultant?

Whoever is not OC at Washington next year, Smith/Tedford, should be Oregon State's OC hire.
I don't think bringing in Tedford necessarily meant he thought Jonathan Smith needed help. It could just be a favor to a guy that has been out of college coaching for the past few years and is looking to get his foot back in somewhere. Hitching your wagon to a team that was a preseason top 15 team with media buzz as a potential conference champ and CFP dark horse contender would be a good way to garner a little juice when jobs start opening up again.

Reasonable explanation but not based in fact, just opinion. Alternatively, they brought Tedford into mentor Smith or potentially replace Smith. We'll find out at the end of the year when it all shakes out.
Yep...obviously I have no knowledge of the situation. Just providing a reasonable alternative to the "Jonathan Smith is a lame duck" idea. I also think (again no facts, just opinion) that Petersen had two years with Smith at Boise to evaluate his effectiveness as an offensive coordinator. When he made the jump to Washington, he could've easily parted ways with him if he wasn't up to the job.

I don't think it was with any intention of replacing Smith down the road with Tedford. Wittingham did the same thing at Utah with Dennis Erickson, brought him in as an offensive consultant. The knowledge, experience, and familiarity with the league coaches like Tedford or Erickson have can be invaluable to a staff.
Petersen knew exactly what their offensive issues were, and they weren't Smitty. Petersen coached Kellen Moore remember.

Exactly. lets not forget that Petersen was once a highly successful OC in his own right. Pretty unlikely Tedford was there to loom in the background as a replacement. He is there to help. it is a savvy move, that maybe GA should look into... instead of grabbing ex player and major figure in your 11 win year, Keeton, to be your QB consultant, maybe get somebody with experience there? just saying.
in 2014, UW had a sophomore QB in Miles that was also of a bit of questionable character... in 2015 they had a freshman as Miles medically retired, and did pretty well honestly. Now they are killing it. a pretty reasonable arc if you ask me.
Smith is also the QB coach at UW. His QB is 118 of 172 for 1709 yards, 68.6% 26 TDs and 2 INTs after 7 games. that is some kind of efficient.
at on 37, Smith has already put up a pretty impressive career. Lets not forget he was OC at Montana as well, and did pretty good there too.
I am still a fan of it. I think he has a very sharp offensive mind, and it is hard to argue with his QB development.

GA did this already, last year.
I know... Gary Crowton, whom is close to McGivens, was a coach to him at one time and a person McGivens calls "biggest influence on my coaching life".
All that does is reconfirm your existing bias. it does not pushing you to explore a new direction. It is still perpetuating the good old boys network and bringing in people that are from your tree and are going to do the things you already want to do. It doesn't show me you are looking to branch out in a new direction.

Dennis Erickson was hired in 2013 as Co-Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs Coach. Brian Johnson was demoted from Offensive Coordinator to Co-Offensive Coordinator in 2013. Johnson's contract was not renewed in 2014.
Crowton was hired after six games in 2015. (Oregon State scored 32 more points with him than without him.) Baldwin was demoted from Offensive Coordinator to Inside Receivers Coach in 2016. Crowton now is the Offensive Coordinator at Stephen F. Austin.
The two previous moves tend to support the idea that Washington is working Smith off of the coaching staff, unless someone has a different read on the situation.

With one big exception. Witthingham and GA are defensive minded coaches. Petersen is exact opposite his history as an assistant and HC are exclusively offensive. Petersen knows a good OC when he sees one, not sure GA or Wittingham do. Petersen would not have brought Smitty with him if he didn't believe he could get the job done. Resources were not an issue if he felt otherwise he could have gone out and bought the OC of his liking right out of the gate.
Tedford was hired for two reasons. One, as an offering to UW fans/boosters to buy Smitty a little more time to show how capable he truly is with the right QB. Two, as stated earlier, Tedford's knowledge, experience, and familiarity of the conference are valuable which help to take some load off Smitty plate freeing him up to focus on QB development. It was a win, win, win hire.

And, Tedford needs to be actively on a staff coaching in some manner to be viable for another job. He's still has $$ coming from Cal this year I believe and being hired/wanted by CP is a huge plus in the eyes of some AD's. Being on the staff of a top 5 potential playoff team just adds to your "hirability".
I't a plus plus for both guys.
