Rainer pounders were in vogue during my time (late 80's). 12 pack from Russ's Day n Night for what... $3.99 (early 80's)
In the mid- to late-80s, you could get the half rack of pounder bottles for $3.99, with the occasional sale of $2.99. I also liked to venture forth and get a Schlitz Malt Liquor 40 oz 'pon occasion.
I had a can of Rainier about 10 years ago, or thereabouts, just to take a stroll down memory lane.
Nasty, vile stuff.
Fortunately, by the early 90s, microbrews were spreading their wings, and beer quality vaulted into the stratosphere.

Schaefer...the one beer to have when you're having more than one! We drank only beer with an "sch" somewhere in the name. The only exception was Heidelberg and that was because of "Heidi" on the label. That girl could "schwing!"

Until we wised up, moved apart, in the mid to late 90's friends and I held a scramble, The Oly Open (TOO much alcohol). No other beer allowed. Each two man team began with 2 cases (the days where you could easily bring your own coolers). Two teams on each hole. The "drinker" on each team traded off each hole. Once teed off... every empty subtracted a stroke. Empties tossed after putting out. Very strategic... drink too much too fast to get way under par... well, we had "rookies" that were left at the clubhouse for the 2nd nine. Most were average to below average golfers. Always paired best with worst, etc. Rotated courses each Spring. Taking sharp corners later in the 18 always meant "cooler slides".. right out of the cart. If you were lucky it'd just slid and not topple over. Although we accused some teams of intentional "slides"... if you foamed the beer less drinking per can! CHEATERS! Record if I recall was at Albany Golf Club (by the river/bridge)... something like 90 - all 48 beers = net 42. Just recently my son, nephew, and brother played a couple O'fest tourneys... intro'd the youngsters to Rainer and Oly pounders. Fun times!

We used to drink Keystone while at OSU....god that crap was awful. Yet I kept drinking it because it was cheap. Got into making my own beer in the early 90's and haven't touched any of that cheap domestic stuff in decades. Quality over Quantity.

My first extended drinking competition (playing quarters) featured Hamms - 37 years later and I smell that stuff from 10 feet away and start to feel ill.

In HS we dinged the s%#t out of my friend's dining room table plying quarters. It had a protective cover over it, but the quarters didn't bounce well off of it, so off came the cover. The good news was that his Mom didn't discover the damage for some time because they rarely removed the cover.
