Every time I see a post about potential coordinators or coaches, former Beavers are listed over and over again. I know Niner being back is nostalgic and may be a home run, but his staff should be comprised of the best coaches he can get, not the coaches he can get that are also former Beavs.
Also, I'm not against Bray or Heyward, or others, just stating that a staff made up of all former Beavs sounds fun, but chances are it wouldn't be effective.

Head Coach: Jonathan Smith
Offense:
Co -OC: Brian Lindgren
OL/Co-OC: Jim Michalczik
QB: ??
REC: ??
RB: ??
1 Beav 2 not beav
Is that too many for you?
Defense:
DC:??
DL: ??
Linebackers/Co-DC: Trent Bray
Def Backs: ??
Safeties/ Special Teams: Jake Cookus
total 3 beavs 2 not beavs
I hope they hire as many QUALIFIED Beavers as they can get.
QB: ??
REC: ??
RB: ??
DC/Co-DC: Keith Heyward
DL: Inoke Brekterfield
Def Backs: Cory Hall
That would be
5 beavs 3 not beavs with 3 open.
Who else?? Other Beavs? Other Non Beavs?

Niner is changing the culture. a culture that was toxic and corrupted by an incompetent leader before. He is getting some ex-beavers that were part of a significant culture change before. Part of an era of rebuild. that is not a coincidence. It isn't just guys he played with. It is guys that were key figures in changing a losing culture. He is getting role models, not just coaches. Guys that are young still and will relate to the kids better. Guides to changing their outlook. JS didn't shy away from it. He said "playing for Oregon State is a good foundation". he believes it is a bonus. I tend to agree. If it works out that that a good chunk of the staff are Ex-beavers. awesome. He did it for a reason.

Half of Wisconsin's staff is former Badgers and that intentional choice seems to be working there.
Yes, guys need to be qualified but a the end the day no one can sell a college the way someone who truly loves the college can and alums typically love the college more than others.

He did it for a reason. I can see that. I just wonder how many other staffs at other schools have ever been constructed in such a way? What were the results? What unforeseen problems surfaced, if any? I only bring it up, because he either succeeds, or doesn't and is fired.. If it is the latter, you are not only firing him, but essentially his entire staff. A staff the could be loaded with young, enthusiastic former Beaver players, who are now coaches, and having been fired by their alma mater, won't ever return. That is a tough row to hoe. It is one that could have unintended consequences, for years to come. I'm not a doom and gloom guy, I'm not predicting failure. I'm just posing the question for the sake of discussion.

[ We’ll if it would make you feel better, we could hire a bunch of former uck players. Then if they didn’t do well, you could still be happy when they were all fired.

I'm not upset that Beavs are being hired, guys. I'm just posing the question, for discussion, that OSU should contemplate the long term consequences of their actions, good or bad.
But yeah, we should just hire ex ducks, and be super excited when they fail and get fired. That's really what I want.

...just stating that a staff made up of all former Beavs sounds fun, but chances are it wouldn't be effective. Although I'm about to argue against almost every thing you just said, I actually understand where you are coming from. I am *not* one of those who automatically believes that a former Beaver is the best choice just because they are a former Beaver. I was never on the Lester Conner for B-Ball Coach bandwagon and, honestly, I was waaay off the Jonathan Smith for Football Coach bandwagon. If we ever bring on a former Beaver for an important paid position on a coaching staff just because they are a former Beaver, I will be disappointed. When JS was announced I was more than a little dubious. I was afraid that we had done exactly what I didn't want to see: Hired a former Beaver for an important paid position just because he was a former Beaver. Then I watched his press conference and I came to a wonderful realization. He was not hired because he was a former Beaver. He was hired because Ray and Barnes felt he had the best plan and the best chance of making OSU football successful. A big part of that is because he can sit in a recruit's home and can "genuinely tell them what it is like and how it looks to get it done, because I've done it and it can be done again". This is huge. At UW JS couldn't really point to his OSU Fiesta Bowl ring and use that as a way to attract recruits to UW. He can and will do this at OSU. If Keith Heyward comes to OSU, he'll have the same advantage. Not only is he highly-regarded coach and has a reputation as a great recruiter, he has the same ability as JS to tell recruits that he knows it can be done because he was there when it was done before. Same for Jake Cookus. He was a key part of that 2000 team. He can look recruits in the eye and tell them it *can* be done at OSU. Inoke, if he should come to OSU, shouldn't even need any OSU ties to make us excited about him as a choice. He certainly has proven himself as a D-line coach at Wisconsin. He wasn't at OSU in 2000 but he was here for the beginning of the turn-around. Regardless, would he be a bad choice as a defensive coach? Should we NOT try to get him simply because he's a former Beaver? Same thing as Inoke applies to Trent Bray. A well-regarded coach who was chosen at interim HC at Nebraska to try to hold that team together while they waited to get a new coach. Nebraska fans seem to think of him as one of the "good ones" there. He's certainly not a bad choice and he also has a little bit of ability to tell recruits that he knows it can be much better at OSU than it has been for the past few years. I don't think any of the names I've seen bandied around sound like coaches who would be hired simply because they are former Beavers. On the other hand, the fact that they *are* former Beavers, especially for those who were here around 2000, gives them a big benefit for recruiting to OSU. I don't see that as a bad thing. I'm baffled by your comment that a staff of former Beavers "wouldn't be effective". That would only be true if we were looking at hiring unqualified coaches just to have Beavers on the staff. Don't see that happening at all. I'd say that a staff of the guys I've seen mentioned, mixed with the other coaches we've already hired from other Power 5 schools, could be VERY effective. Go Beavs! I've been very happy with all the names that have come out so far. Wasn't too familiar with Lindgren but trust JS's judgement. I just don't see him hiring people he doesn't have full confidence in just for the sake of being a Beav. Just wish we didn't have to wait until after the Vegas bowl to hear that Keith is on board as DC/co-DC. If Inoke decided to jump on the train, that would just be the icing on the cake! (Petras signing too plz.)

Were any coaches on the previous staff former Beavers? Apparently that didn't work out so well. It's not about the finding the "best" individual coaches. It's about assembling a staff of coaches who collectively through cohesion, collaboration, and shared ideals and principles will trump any group of hired mercenaries who work on an island within the program. Trust is key to success in any organization. Staffing talent without loyalty and trust would be stupid. Given the last year this team went through, it is absolutely critical JS's initial staff selection is filled with capable, trustworthy, loyal people. Coaching talent don't mean squat if the coach is also an a'hole backstabber.
