I say idk about Riley being assistant head coach because I fear Riley will give Jonathan Smith some really bad advice on game winning crunch time decisions.
I'll give an example,:The Beavers are down by six and there on the USC(I put a random team there for a example) 44 yard line driving to score with under 1 min left. The Beavers don't convert on 3rd down but come up short they get 4th and 1 and Jon asks Riley what to do, Riley tells Jon to punt, giving the ball back to the other team and thus losing the game cuz of "Riley's Advice to Jonathan Smith"
Now I know that example is far fetched on Riley mentoring Jonathan Smith on the sidelines, but that is what I fear when Riley might do somw mentoring on JS on crucial moments during big games.
What I'm really realiying on JS is that he has more common sense to make a better judgement call during crucial game time crunch moments than Riley.
I know Riley can coach QB's and Wr's pretty well and that's good, cuz Riley is more of a TEACHER, than a coach. If there is any person I'd want teach me about being a QB or WR as a player, or any position in football, I'd pick Riley in a heart beat.
I can only hope my fear about Riley is wrong, I know he is just there to be a mentor to JS but I really hope JS knows how to win a game in crucial crunch moments and not ask Riley for advice on how to win a game at the end.

I think the new OC will have some input on play calling. CJS is a cerebral guy. I'm pretty sure he's been thinking about running his own program for quite some time.

Crucial crunch. Is that a cereal? I'd try it. You're worried about JS's common sense and judgement? How about you do everyone's eyes a favor and worry about perfecting your first paragraph instead. |

As I followed your story, I more expected the pass play on 3rd and inches that ultimately costs us the game. In my recollection, Riley wasn't a conservative coach...in fact I can remember many times when all we'd need was a yard, and he'd draw up some long elaborate pass play trying to catch the defense off guard. Now sometimes it worked, and we were all happy. No.....have to say Riley was pretty gutsy. Two point conversion attempt in Seattle in '98 anyone? I was there..... Sun Bowl 2008 against Missouri? That game was freaking incredible.

As I followed your story, I more expected the pass play on 3rd and inches that ultimately costs us the game. In my recollection, Riley wasn't a conservative coach...in fact I can remember many times when all we'd need was a yard, and he'd draw up some long elaborate pass play trying to catch the defense off guard. Now sometimes it worked, and we were all happy. No.....have to say Riley was pretty gutsy. Two point conversion attempt in Seattle in '98 anyone? I was there..... Sun Bowl 2008 against Missouri? That game was freaking incredible. yeah Riles seemed to lose his nerve a bit later in his reign. Too many fg when down by two scores in the second half kind of thing. Here's the thing, when it was going good his teams had a way of hanging around and then winning the close ones. It was never blink, never panic and be a counterpuncher. Eventually that turned into Give up leverage, get hit so bad in the early rounds you become demoralized and start throwing the ball every down out of desperation. JS needs to go with his guts and trust himself to make the right calls. Riley will help a lot but in crunch time that's when the buck stops with the HC. He is going to take the blame or get the credit. |

There is not a coach in the world who would advise a punt when down 6, with under a minute remaining, from anywhere on the field, let alone from the opponents 44 yard line. |

That game was freaking incredible. Man Riley had a lot of seasons that got off to (really) slow starts, which was really my main frustration with him, but he gave us a lot of great wins too. That 2006 season with Matt Moore was so much fun - Beating USC with the failed 2-point conversion and then getting the conversion in the Sun Bowl. The "TWO POINTS BERNARD" call from the TV commentators is one of those moments that always stuck with me. I was lucky enough to go to that USC game and also the Civil War that ended with a blocked FG at the end of the game. 2006 is one of my favorite seasons of OSU football. |

It's JS's call regarding MR and it's JS's neck in the noose should it not go well. I say let JS have his way since he was hired as the HC after all. No doubt there'll be some hires that did not turn out well. That kind of stuff happens in many lines of work. If at first you don't succeed, you're average...LOL! The real steel shines when the chips are down and the inevitable errors need to be overcome. I'm rooting for JS to do just that! Remember, he's doing the equivalent of coming into a shop and finding a beater car halfway disassembled. Now it's time to play a game of Gas Monkey Garage and turn the broken down machine into a beast the old fashioned way, with skinned knuckles, lots of cuss words and plenty of hard work. I'll believe, er, Believe, that JS is just the mechanic to git 'er done!

Why we so worried about Riley when JS is the head coach and in listening to him, there is nothing to suggest that he is going to be too conservative or lacks aggressive coaching capacity. But he is also extremely analytical - a good coach with a chance at greatness - Go Beavs!

LOL... I guess if MR was the type to read message boards he should care the most. I mean any failure in this program... losses, play calls, injuries, food poisoning... will be blamed on MR by the "haters". In some circular way it will be his fault.
Of course, any successes will be in spite of him!
