The whole "Stanford vs. UCLA or USC vs. Cal" is some big rivalry that needs to be perpetuated seems like complete crap to me. Aside from Oregon/Washington, I can't think of another rivalry within the conference (outside of the Big Game/Apple Cup/Civil War/Territorial Cup/USC-UCLA) that absolutely needs to be held every year.

Do you dislike skipping them because you want all Pac-12 teams to play all the others every year? Or because you think it hurts recruiting? Personally I would rather every conference team play every other team, every year. Get rid of the conference title game if we need the extra week to get it done... In terms of recruiting, I have never understood why playing USC/UCLA every year hurts or helps... I can see WINNING against USC/UCLA helping (of course winning in general helps), otherwise it probably doesn't make much of a difference that we skip them every couple years. IIRC it is USC vs Notre Dame being a requirement every year that really throws schedules into disarray as well....

Wilner also has some interesting things to say about our recent Hawaii SNAFU and future recruiting/marketing things OSU should do: www.mercurynews.com/2018/05/14/oregon-states-recruiting-snafu-right-idea-wrong-execution/Among the highlights: - Skirting recruiting rules is the RIGHT thing for OSU to be doing we just need to be better at it
- Jonathan Smith needs to spend more time with his shirt off, Putin style, giving us all a good few of those six pack abs and guns
- OSU needs to have more outrageous billboards, I mean if it was good for the
goose *uck it will be good for the Beaver, right?
Boy, you sure can tell we are in the dog days of the offseason....

At least we alternate home/away with USC instead of it being the 3 (or 4) roadies (skip years??) per home game that used to be the norm. We need to beat those guys in the Coliseum... Repeatedly...

Thanks for the article. I actually like the fact that the California schools play each other every year. The way I see it, as much as the conference is divided into north/south, it can easily be thought of as three distinct regions as well: Northwest, California, and Desert/Mountain schools. There's a fair number of people in California Pac 12 schools who think about winning the state in the same terms that people in the Northwest think of winning that region. I would like to see the inland schools think of their region like that, as well, if they don't already.
I would actually like to see the last three games of every season be against the in-conference regional foes.

The California schools have played each other every single year since 1936. Oregon-Washington cannot claim that (every year since 2002). Oregon State has a longer continuous rivalry with Washington (every year since 1991) and California, as well, for that matter (every year since 1995). UCLA and USC's rivalries with California and Stanford are older than their rivalries with one another (played every year since 1936). Stanford-USC has been played every year since 1925 and California-USC has been played every year since 1926. Stanford-UCLA has been played every year since 1928, and California-UCLA has been played every year since 1933. The most-played Pac-12 rivalries: 1. Civil War 2. Big Game 3. Oregon-Washington 4. Apple Cup 5. California-USC 6. Oregon State-Washington and Oregon State-Washington State (tied)

In response to a few things in this thread: obf - I agree that we should play everyone every year. However, that would mean only one non-conference game, and that's never going to happen. Having a presence in Southern California every year during the season I think is a good thing just because it allows us to visit recruits in their backyard. Also, a game vs. USC or UCLA is going to draw more eyeballs on a yearly basis than a game vs. Colorado or Arizona. Even if we don't win, maybe a kid sees an in game interview with the head coach that piques his interest, or sees an OSU player at his position being used in a way he would like to be featured in college, or sees a promo video about how he can study tsunamis or something that he never thought about doing before. seastape - I love the idea of November being regional month. Seems like a good way to promote the conference and maybe draw more people to games when the weather gets terrible. wilkyisdashiznit - I'm not of the opinion that just because something happens all the time, it should be continued. I have been following OSU football for most of my 38 years on this earth, and I get no more excited for the UW game than I do for a game vs. Arizona State. Oregon is the only one that matters more to me than any other. For USC, I think it probably goes UCLA and Notre Dame (probably in either order depending on which fan you ask) and then everyone else. The Big Ten has all sorts of hokey trophies, but do you think Michigan really cares about taking home the Little Brown Jug (for beating Minnesota) more than it cares about playing Iowa or Northwestern? I tend to doubt it.

There are no protected East-West games in the Big Ten, so obviously the Little Brown Jug did not mean enough to keep it going as an annual rivalry game. Minnesota still has the Floyd of Rosedale, Paul Bunyan's Axe, and $5-Bits-O-Broken-Chair, though. I live in the Valley of the Sun, so I get more excited about Arizona State than Washington. However, if it were on TV, which would I rather watch? Oregon State playing Washington or Washington State is about a billion times more entertaining than watching Oregon State play Arizona State.

It has nothing to do with longevity... but Oregon State-Washington has forged a mini rivalry. Nothing like UW-Oregon... but starting in 2000 forward there have been some pretty heated, and pretty contentious games with Washington. The Bernard "fumble", the Lyle Moevao de-cleater, the Jake Locker hit, the Markus Wheaton hit, the 69 point or whatever drubbing in a miserable rainy day. There has been some... stuff... that keep some level of intrigue there.

USC vs. Notre Dame is the only condition I see USC placing on the schedule.
Cal and Stanford likely required the annual USC game. USC travels bigly to the Bay Area and takes over Union Square every year, alternating between Stanford and Cal. I would not call it a rivalry as much as a shopping/sightseeing opportunity. SF is one of the great cities of the world and USC alum like to travel there.

I think we should always play Washington State. Others may disagree.

I think a lot of folks in California would probably disagree with that. NorCal vs SoCal is definitely "a thing" and while it's on a whole different level with pro sports, I think some of the same passion/rivalry trickles down to college. I have plenty of friends and relatives in the bay area who feel that way at least..
