Watching Paul Finebaum's show revealed the Cowboys were picked #5 at the Big XII media day. That OSU will be a lighter load than tOSU was for sure!

Still going to be a disparity in defense I think. Offensively, with our running backs, we might be able to pile a lot of points up tho. Ball control might be the big tipping point.

Deeeee How much time does it take to build that hardness The last dam set up in the Rocky Long era really. Anybody remember the aha! Moment when that D started backing people up consistently? May Aug 30 be that buck stops here moment.

The fact that we’re bemoaning being outplayed by a Big 12 defense is depressing.

There was one series where Arizona went backwards each play until it was 4th and forever. The Beavs defense that year had several JC dudes who could really play. Hopefully we will see some flashes of defense this year that forces 3 and outs and gives our offense a chance to wear the opposing defense down.

We consistently had top pass efficiency rated D's during Erickson. There have been several really good Beaver defenses since Rocky Long left town. They might be getting farther in the rear view mirror, but you don't have to go back to the Long era to find them.

I meant to say the beginnng of a good defensive era started with Rocky Long and continued throughout much of Riley's tenures.

Beating Okie State will be more about the offense than the defense. If our offense moves the ball consistently and avoids turnovers, we'll make it the same kind of game that Okie State played against most of their schedule last year- a high scoring game decided by a single score.
That's just a function of their style of play, an offense that goes fast and takes what the defense gives them- whether our defense improves from bad to average isn't going to prevent them from dictating that. They'll find ways to score against anybody who doesn't have a great D.
What the defense can do is avoid giving up the big plays. They're starting a new QB with less than two years (transfer) in Mike Gundy's complex offense. Our D won't be able to get a lot of stops, but they can give him more opportunities to make mistakes. Making their offense earn every yard and take 8-12 plays to score vs. 4-6 doubles the opportunity for them turn it over, which tends to decide a track meet.

Not only TFL but laid a hit that left a mark all three times

You can't score if I've got the ball. RTFB. Eat some clock. Keep field position if nothing else. If they have to keep 7/8 in the box, makes the passing game easier. Keeps the D off the field and fresh. You can play O tired. Try to play D tired and you be in trouble.

What was the guys name on PO that used to screech that 100 times a day and 1000 on game day? Totally agree though, in all of our games Time of possession will be a key metric. Quick scores are nice, but long, 10, 11 , 12 play drives that end in touchdowns.... THOSE are GOLD! We definitely have the horses to do it. We have three bona-fide Pac-12 starting running backs (Well 2 for sure, I am convinced Baylor is too). And a WR group that is so bursting at the seems that a 4* transfer may end up being our fourth best WR. And the real linchpin, is we have two legit pac-12 QBs, both with at least a year of experience and tutelage under Smith and Lindgren. The only real question mark on offense is the OL, but even that is anchored by two experienced seniors (Brandel and Lavaka) and Kiper is, IMHO, one of the most exciting, huge and athletic OL prospects we have ever had. The ingredients are there for this to be a VERY good offense, like lead the league in total yards / points good. If everyone stays Healthy (big IF) and Lindgren is as good of an OC as I think/hope he is we should put up plenty of points. The defense just needs to be fast and aggressive, I don't see us stopping drive after drive, but if we can be disruptive and become a defense focused on TFL and turnovers then we could win this game, and a bunch more than many are expecting. Don't get me wrong a bowl game is still a high goal, but not impossible at all. Hmmm.... I need coffee... that got rambly... where were we.... oh yeah RTDB!
