The week 1 camp recap from Angie Machado included this very technical analysis of our kicking performance from all comers so far in fall camp:
"Eeek!"
What is going on? Is it time for Cookus to go? Or are we simply reverting to the mean after being uncommonly blessed for so long with college kickers that are above-average, if not exceptional?
I can't remember many deficiencies in the actual team play of our special teams last year, in terms of coverage and returns, so Cookus seems to be doing OK there. But so far I see no indication he has much ability in terms of managing the physical and mental aspects of the kickers on our roster.
Like defense, kicking is another area where I think we need to see immediate improvement from the first snap compared to last year, if we want to have measurable improvement this year. If we don't, I think Cookus needs to be on the hot seat...

Ummm, Cookus can't be the one on the hot seat unless he is absolutely totally 100 percent responsible for recruiting kickers. If our special teams are good on coverages and giving the kickers time to kick - then we have to have a guy who can kick in game situations. Most of these kids come out of high school with the leg; they have to prove they have the focus and mental toughness to use their skills in a game situation.
But "Eeek!" is not a good thing to come out of Fall camp with 17 days to go before the first game.

Cookus is not a kicking coach. He was a DB and special teams player and that is what he does. The kicking coach requires some specialized knowledge. Kind of like baseball where you need a pitching coach.

Grain of salt: she also says we're loaded at LB. We're a long ways from loaded, but improved I'm sure. And at kicker, we're not automatic, but we're probably not "eek" either. I believe they only get to see a small portion of practice that they have to develop a whole lot of content from(?)...

Isn't Alexis Serna helping out with the kickers?

Serna isn't technically a coach, but one would think he'd be assisting in some capacity....

LOL!
For the Worst Kick Ever. the award goes to Garo Yepremian, who had a FG attempt blocked, returned for a TD and Garo looked as silly as one of the Three Stooges. Despite the horrible play, Miami beat Washington 14-7, won 'em all and took home the Lombardi. The score was close. The game was not.
For Worst Time To Miss, Anderson of the Vikings had made every FG attempted but one the season they played Atlanta and lost with a Super Bowl berth on the line. Why? The one miss came at the end of the game. End of season!
From Worst To First, that goes to Serna. Has anyone ever come off a FUBAR game to go on to win the Groza? That's a feat, pun intended...LOL!
Wide Right, How Florida State Folded In The Nineties. Seminoles vs Hurricanes was one of the great games each season. Several ended badly for the Tallahasseans due to kickers going wide right at the end of games.
For Best Kick Beat By Best Return, our directional punter (Paulescu?) pinned Reggie Bush to the sideline. Bush had Beavers all around him and still broke loose for a TD. Even when things go right, they can still go wrong!
Kickers indeed!

I think Sam Paulescu missed those SC games. But I'm too lazy to look up the rosters. I did find his wiki page where there was a strange entry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_PaulescuHe is considered one of the worst Quarterbacks in NFL history.

That one hardly qualifies as "best kick" The strategy for the whole game was "DON"T KICK TO REGGIE BUSH" It worked well......until it didn't...... Go Beavs!!

Totally unrelated but one night I was drunk as could be ($2 Coronas on Thursdays at Headline) and spent a solid 5 minutes trying to convince Aric Williams that the guy that cut in front of me at the bar was Sam Paulescu. It wasn't.

Maybe the best kicker to have is one who has already lived through the nightmare of losing the game winner a couple of times. If they can live through that and still win the job they probably have a certain toughness about them. It worked for our LSU loser. Maybe after that happens you have less fukcs to give and you just go out there and kick it...

I did find his wiki page where there was a strange entry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_PaulescuHe is considered one of the worst Quarterbacks in NFL history. 2004 Fog Bowl: Sam Paulescu: First Quarter: 33-yard punt. No return. 40-yard punt. No gain on return. Second Quarter: 58-yard punt. No return. 56-yard punt. No return. 55-yard punt. No return. Third Quarter: 51-yard punt. 8-yard return. Fourth Quarter: 39-yard punt. 65-yard return. 50-yard punt. No return. 43 degrees at kickoff with 81% humidity. It got down to 36 degrees with 93% humidity. You would expect the wind to be a bigger factor, considering how much better Paulescu punted going North than going South, but the wind topped out at 3 mph.
