So, I didn't take any notes at the time, but here is what I noticed.
When the 1's were on the field. The Oline and particularly the left side did what they wanted. Skill guys look to be as good as we think. RB is deep, both QB's looked the part, Luton appeared very confident long drive to start the scrimmage, I will note the 1st Sting D held them on the goal line. Gebbia looked the part of a starter, displayed good touch, I was impressed. This team has offensive stars they will score points, it is known. My only unknown will be consistency. But the opening drive the length of the field was a great sign.
The Dline looks a bit light, particularly on the edges and the talent appears to drop off pretty quickly. We will struggle again. The back end looks better, but still appeared to make a few mistakes (1v1's), and not a ton of plays but it looked like Defensively everything was called pretty vanilla, which helped the Offense.
I liked the LB's play, but again they suffer from the mistakes/shortcomings of the guys in front. I saw a semblance of a pass rush, ...but not enough. At least the Dline improved their ability get off a block, which eluded many player last year. I guess if I had to sum up the progress, I saw a ton more "Energy/Effort" from the Defense overall. I saw a better use of their hands and some actual moves that pressured the Oline., less taking plays off. It ain't perfect, but I did see the Oline multiple times be forced to hold guys, so I will take that as a ok sign of development.
I was impressed by our 3rd string QB. Moore has a gunslinger mentality, not worried by a pass rush bearing down on him. Still he tried to do too much and payed for it.
Biggest thing overall I noticed was the players seemed to be having more fun. Coach Niner also runs a tight ship. People were in the right places, the organization seemed pretty sharp to my eyes. Previous years at open practices, there would be guys getting excited, but overall there was a very serious tone, and the QB's would sort of have a i dunno like "forced vocal leadership" for lack of a better term. Just watching body language it the team was into the practice and engaged and it seemed genuine.
