I've been through a lot of bad years of Beaver football. But even deep into the 28-year losing season streak, I would eventually enter a phase each Fall that I refer to as "irrational optimism". There is the rational optimism, based on tangible things like our offense building on what was a pretty good first year under Coach JS, and some talent improvements on defense, which can lead to thoughts that the Beavers might look better on the field this season. Then there is the irrational optimism that says somehow the Beavers will prove everyone wrong and not only win the first game of the season, against Oklahoma State, but also use this is a springboard to win all the OOC games plus 3 conference games and end up with a winning season! At least!
I don't really believe this too strongly, but there is a part of me that believes it is possible. The worse things get the stronger the belief can get that the Beavers will exceed all expectations. As horrible as it is, as fans, to sit through seemingly hopeless games and losing seasons, it is in our lowest depths of despair that every win becomes appreciated again and we find hope in the smallest of signs. I just keep coming back (on my 22nd year as a season ticket holder and donor) and I just keep finding hope. It's what being a sports fan is all about, at least for me. Maybe if I was a bandwagon fan who only cheered for winners or I was lucky enough to have my team be one of those who always wins, I would think being a sports fan is about being rewarded with wins. But I'm not a bandwagon fan and my team doesn't always win, so I think being a fan is about hope. Always about hope.

You have to have some eternal optimism to be a Beaver football fan. I’ve survived the dark decades and the recent free fall with my humor still intact and it is indeed time to have some irrational optimism.
I actually am pretty optimistic about our ability to score points this year. I really like our skill players and if our line can avoid being decimated by injuries we might just pull off an upset or two. Defensively, I think we’re awfully thin up front which I can’t say makes me very confident about stopping anybody, but hey, maybe a couple of the young guys will mature fast and a committee approach will work. I think our schedule makes it tough to get W’s this year, but I do think we’ll see a better team out there.
In the end, I root for the Beavs because they’re my school, win or lose. I don't have much use for band wagoners who blow with the wind. It takes some backbone to stick with your team when it’s been pretty bad for a while, but it’s pretty damn fun when it turns.

and the chant from way in the depths of the Family zone. it's barely audible at first. Just a couple kids. Then a few of the crowd hears it & picks up on it. Then the whole east side is in on it.....then the Terrace & South end zone hear it & join in....finally the West side joins in fully & the stadium is rockin
Rose Bowl...Rose Bowl....Rose Bowl

4-0 start, quite possible. After that we see the schedule get tougher as injuries accumulate. It could be quite the struggle to get to 6-6. Colorado was doing okay until they played us. The wheels came off for the Buffs as they wound up 5-7. If that kind of storyline happens to us, I hope the coaches, players and fans do not wind up feeling so down that JS gets hot-seated.
With so many seniors starting this year, next year might not have the best record. The new players take time to physically round into form and gain experience. Year 3 could be another season of Beaver building.
Now by the time we get to the fourth year of JS, the combination of experienced developed talent, transfers and frosh flashes should see us settle in. The W-L record will depend on how deep the Pac-12 is. At least our hat will be in the ring.
My POV is to simply watch the construction take place and enjoy the ride. At least the pigskin program will show signs of life. At best, we exceed expectations. Going from a pitch black night to a bit of a glow in the predawn sky means the sun rises eventually. Once that takes place, we can then get back to being spoiled fans...LOL!
