Inquiring minds want to know........
Is it X's and O's or Jimmies and Joes? I ate up all the hype like a fat man at an all day buffet only to see the same crappy "can't get off the field until they score" defense that has plagued us for going on 5 years now.
I am soooo tired of bashing my head into a brick wall every morning.
Go Beavs!!

It was hard to watch. I heard some vile language reminding Me of what I heard during Riley's last year. I see very little improvement. One thing I did notice was they had 3 down linemen on defense. We were not good and not physical. Also heads were down. Getting Home Washougal from Corvallas was a Joy as well. 1:20 a.m. Really nothing to be happy about. Wonder if we win 1 game? If I were Coach I would apologize for the crappy product we now have.

The switch to a 3 man front directly corresponds with the overall ineptitude of the defense. Could a change be somewhere in our future, or will we be the definition of insanity? Go Beavs!!

Was Harsin considered when we were looking for a head coach? Not saying I have given up on JS, but I am surprised Harsin does not have a Power 5 job yet. I know he inherited a good program. But it is hard to argue with a 53 - 15 record.

We still need to wait a few games, but if last night's defense is going to be the norm for the season, then Smith will have to consider whether to scrap the defense, Tibesar, Suiaunoa, or any combo of the three.
Oregon St.'s run defense is alarming (again). Not only were there running lanes consistently open to Okla St RB's and QB, but actual chunks of the field were often open to the Cowboy runners which gave them a lot of room to escape even on plays where the Beavs D' blew up the original play.
Although we (always) need to keep upgrading, I don't think it is merely a question of athletes; I think the coaches are failing to put the defensive front seven in a position to succeed. The athletes get plenty of penetration and closed gaps last night only to have the other gaps of the line be wide open to attack. Aydon clogged up a lot of the line and Bennett, Whittley, Hodgins often got in the backfield. Gumbs was in there some times.
But our DL left holes and the LB's were often out of position to make the play. I don't think the current plan is working, at all. Like I said, we need to wait a few games to see what improves, but if past and current results have any reflection in future results...that's trouble.

Not as egregious as some of the games last year but it's still a thing. Players in position to make the tackle but lunging, losing their feet, doing everything right to the point of contact and then inexplicably falling off the target. Looks to me like inexperience but it also happens with some of the 2cnd and 3rd year guys. Still, it was GAME 1. The ceiling is still unknown at this point.

Tibesar must have a realtor on speed dial, don't see him long for this world in Corvallis. And that's a good thing.

I am barfing watching the Ducks. But their defense by Avalos is really good even though the young FR Auburn QB is playing awful. It makes me realize how unprepared, unimaginative, unresponsive, unaggressive, unexciting the Beaver defense is under Tibesar.

I give credit to Banker and Riley that it never seemed this bad (except against a running QB). I just wish we had some guys up front that were fired up and were visibly hitting people out there and physical. Football is a violent game and we have some guys that really shouldn't be playing football.

You don't have a coaching problem.
You have a recruiting problem.
You do not have the athletes to play better defense.
Never confuse reality with fantasy.

Never confuse reality with fantasy. i just saw the best blitz scheme i can remember used by fresneck to squelch SC in the red zone not just 1 but 3 or 4 attackers got to quarter back from different angles. The SC qb now has a leg injury. I am not celebrating that but you cant tell me that Fresneck has anywhere near the athletes that SC has, yet they overwhelmed them with a scheme, a play call and technique.

Oklahoma State is much better than USC. Clay Helton should be fired for the play call he made on 4th and 1 at midfield late in the game. Horrendous.
