Actually it's been pretty darned good for the most part. For some people. For people that didn't know you needed a special version of Facebook, or had problems with internet, not so good. If it fails for 30 percent of your potential viewers, it's a failure. But I didn't have to watch the 2nd half offense, so there is that. Plus... had to laugh during the game as we discussed how highly viewed! Most accessible... viewership... Lol Think we saw it top out at 24k or so. So, what 26k OSU fans watched live or via stream? 😏

That’s not crap. would have been more poeple but Facebook played a dirty trick and wouldn't make content "accessible" for newly created accounts. I think a lot of people without pre existing facebook accounts got screwed. I had to use a long buried account and see some embarrassing facebook interactions from back in the day.

Does anyone know how the Facebook stream came to be? It felt like it was the local sports channel using technology available to them to broadcast the game to a larger audience.

MWC has a deal with Stadium College Sports (whomever streamed it on FB), I'm sure Spectrum Sports who produced the game was involved as well. Smart news to let people on the mainland watch some lesser seen games for free.

the technology is failing on two fronts. A significant number of viewers are getting poor feeds, and of course the lack of clear information from any official source has found many people unable to use their phones and tablets, not knowing they need a special portable device facebook app, regardless if facebook works within a browser already. The facebook app is one app i don't want. No "special version" of facebook, just the facebook app. Just like EVERY SINGLE OTHER WEBSITE that would perfer you use their app and not the browser. This is not because they can't suck your data in or whatever from the browser, it is to make the experince better to the end user since it is their app they have full control of, instead of pushing content through a browser they have no control of, they can devlop it to work seemlessly with their content, streaming protocols, etc. It goes back to the great "Flash Holy Wars" of the early 2000-teens, when apple refused to allow any flash content on mobile Safari, so everyone started making their own apps to deliver their content instead of trying to push it through the craptastic Safari borwser. Go to any website (youtube, reddit, heck even BENNYSHOUSE.COM) and they will all either limit how you can use them, render like crap, or straight up not work all while begging you to download their app. I get it everyone is afraid of facebook for some reason, but whatever device you are on (assuming android or especially apple) it is already gathering WAY more data than FB ever has. So, I mean, thank goodness you strained out that gnat, it would have gone very poorly with the Camel you swallowed Also, I find it humorous that people can aquire cable, pay for the subscription, cancel directtv and switch, get the cable box, dvr, 4k HD TV, external speakers all set up, pay out the wazoo for "CBS fox sport nw of the amazonian rainforest nature channel 8" so they can watch the Beavers game in glorious 240p resolution, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I WILL NOT DOWNLOAD A FREE APP WHICH I CAN THEN DELETE IMMEDIATELY, so they can watch in (what I thought was amazing quality) for free, anywhere. Oh well, I am sorry you all didn't have a better experince, scincerly. I think this is the way of the future and I am ecited about it. I am sure that when Hulu live or whoever streams the next one people won't be as upset because it wont be the eveil zuckster streaming it. I for one hope EVERY game is on FB, as long as they keep it free

It's good to hear that the quality was good, but I don't like the idea of our games being broadcast through such a new medium. It leaves too many out in the cold. And I disagree strongly with your assessment of Apple v. Google in terms of selling your data. Have you any evidence for your claim? Here's just a quick article to suggest Apple is better. www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2018/04/17/apple-make-simpler-download-your-privacy-data-year/521786002/

I was thinking especially of the older generation who struggle with technology. As an aside, I wonder how many of those "users" are active. I wonder how many of them are actual identities, not some made up internet persona. How many are businesses that don't really care? Lots of young people are not using FB at all.

The only people it left in the cold were folks who hate/boycott facebook. Which is fine, and probably wise. Facebook is probably bad for my health in many ways let alone my (highly curated) personal data. I suppose one could argue that it left people without devices or internet access out in the cold as well.... But in comparrison to the usual avenues we have to see Beaver games FB live provided many, many, many times more access. Whether people used that access or not is a different question, but seriously I am not sure how anyone could think that this "new mendium" was limiting access. The biggest lmiter to accessing Beaver games is.... The Pac-12 network, buth that is a different subject. That USA Today article is basically a paid advertisment by Apple, and if you read the whole thing you would see that even the author (and apple) admited that they still sell ads, and that getting a data report from apple (the meaningless "proof" that companies like to talk about to assuage data capture fears) was actually harder to get and less usful than both google and the evil facebooks data report tool. But, don't let my apple angst confuse you. Google and facebook are bad, bad, bad as well... I would rank them Apple < Facebook < Google in terms of trustworthiness, but in ojective terms I would trust them 1%, 1.1% anf 3%... It is not like I trust any of them, just that I trust Apple very slightly less. I think I just have different expectations going in. I understand that their buisness models are to see my information to other companies, I proceed accordingly. And to a certain extent I engage enough so that I can actually take advantage of those partnerships and data mining. Google learning my habits, likes, common purchases, etc.? That's pretty awesome, google guesses what I am going to search for a good percentage of the time just based off of previous serches and group data, thats pretty awesome. Now, my wifes iPhone listeningto evey conversation we have no matter how hard I try (short of destroying it) to disable the microphone and then using that data to inform all sorts of things (including who she should "firend" on facebook ) UGH, drives me crazy. Two, quick technical reasons why I trust google a smidge more than I trust Apple or Facebook. - Open source vs. EXTREMELY WALLED Garden. For all intents and purposes google products (and more importantly, Android and Chrome, their two operating systems) are open source. Meaning if I want to I can look at / read all of the source code, and actually change, rewrite, download third party fixes and changes, etc. Knowledge is power.... both ways. Google knowing stuff about me is powerful for them, since they can sell it. Me knowing what google is doing in the code (and therfore being able to ACTUALLY DISABLE the gall darn microphone) is also powerful. You (and me and even people who know how to root their iPhone / macbook, and try to decompile the libraries) only really know what apple wants us to know.... which is a paid advertisment in the USAToday
- Opposite of what that article tries to tell you, apple being a status symbol and a hardware company is NOT the antidote to needing / wanting to sell your data. It enables it. They know that they can get away with more because their hardware acolytes will shill for them regardless, and that their bottom line will be bouyed even if people quit some of their popular software applications. Google on the other hand HAS to keep it's software users, it doesn't have a large HW portfolio to fall back on (The Pixel 2 aint cutting it ).
Again, in the end, NONE of them (Apple, FB, Google, Samsung, Reddit, HP, Youtube, DELL, Blizzard, steam, on and on) are trustworthy. You shoudl ALWAYS be protecting yourself and your data as much as possible. But, they provide services and benefits that are woth taking the risk for.
BTW, comcast, who was probably providing the actual internet access for many of us (whether it is streaming FB Live, Netflix, or youtube cat videos), is ALSO mining the crap of the ENTIRE data stream, not just what goes through a single site or app.... Surely you don't think that it is a coincidence that you google around for a new pair of jeans on your laptop, and all of a sudden you are seeing Levi strauss and GAP ads during sportcenter, right?
