Wait... the game was a loss... a TEAM stat... doesn't matter who or why. 0-2... hard to take... but, we've got coaches with only a bit more experience in their responsibilities as about 20 players seeing the field. Too too many mental mistakes by all. Other than OSU not willing to invest in more experienced coaches/staff (not crazy, want to go down the road on who might have been interested), and the ineptness of it all. The injuries, one key transfer (so far), and team discipline really worry me. Players fighting on camera is GAG era crap. The ship needs to be steadied... quickly. And, if the AD wants to know why fans aren't "invested", how about OSU investing in more than the physical plant? Hoping JS is it... but, so far his hires aren't cutting it! Concisely, this is it. Too many mental mistakes by all. Young coaching staff, young team. A young coaching staff that tends to like to gamble and call plays aggressively, by the look of things. The offense has been fairly productive thus far, but some misfires.. it smacks of a team with talent but not without assignment discipline/consistent execution, and it smacks of a coaching staff with some talent but lacking experience/wisdom. I do think you can excuse a clunker of a game from the coaching staff, as long as they aren't all clunkers like this one was. Washington State went through a lot of these type of growing pains with Leach to begin with as well. They show flashes of talent but "same old Cougs" was the story for a couple of years. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that we might go 3-5 years before we start winning more games than we lose. This year, 2 games, during the time while the actual game was being played, I thought "Holy crap the Beavs might have a chance to win this". And really, that's all I'm asking for this year. I like being a fan of a team that has a coach taking chances, putting it on his players to make bold plays, knowing full well he takes the blame if they dont pull it off. Whatever you want to say about JS, he isn't playing "afraid".

Number of FB wins in the past 365 days: ONE. Two. We defeated Southern Utah last Sept. 8, or 365 days ago today, and Colorado on Oct. 27.

Whatever you want to say about JS, he isn't playing "afraid". Discretion is the better part of valor. I would rather see scared wins than brave losses like that one. Blech. That fake punt in that situation was something that you see from a bad middle school coach. You have to have more faith in your defense. Calling a fake punt is playing afraid of X and O football. Blech. The situational play-calling was very bad at the end of both the second and the fourth quarter. Well-coached teams do not look that bad to start out the third quarter and at the end of both halves. Blech. Unless Oregon State just played the best offense in NCAA football, the defense was bad. The offense played well, but Hawai'i did better against Oregon State's defense than Oregon State's offense played against Hawai'i's defense. Having said the foregoing, Oregon State 9 penalties for 92 yards versus Hawai'i 4 penalties for 40 yards. The officiating was a complete joke. It looked like, if it was a fairly-called game, the Beavers would have won by 2-3 touchdowns. Blech. Better days are ahead. Or at least there had better be better days ahead, because that game was a poorly coached/managed/officiated fiasco.

“because that game was a poorly coached/managed/officiated fiasco”. Don’t forget poorly broadcast and commentated as well. If J. Smith has TIME..... to get this crap straightened out I think he will, right now it's learn on the fly. We are getting outplayed out smarted and out coached. Not blaming that on Jonathan at this point, but he does have to make some correct decisions going forward to convince folks that we are heading in the right direction. First one will be to decide that the team needs to give the second QB a shot. Number 2 might be to put the D.C. on a short leash. It has been anything but spectacular so far!

We drove 85 yards in six plays to score a TD on our final possession of the first half. Isn't it good play-calling if you average 14.25 yards per play?

Oregon State drove 85 yards in eight plays. Two penalties. One was pass interference for 15 yards. The other was a false start. 75 yards of offense on six plays. By that time Banker had switched up the defense to take away the run and dare Oregon State to pass. Three of the plays were Jefferson getting stuffed for a combined two yards. The other three plays went for 73 yards. The last play was designed to go right. Banker had the perfect defense called, and Pierce was about to get stuffed like Jefferson. However, Pierce is smart and athletic enough to make something out of nothing, cut back left and into the clear for the touchdown. The touchdown gave Hawai'i 2:25 to drive down and make that great 75-yard drive meaningless. That Hawai'i drive was coupled with two dopey fourth down calls. The second fourth down conversion was after Oregon State had strategically exhausted Hawai'i of timeouts and had called a timeout to ensure a perfect play call. The Beavers still had another timeout that they could have called. Instead, first down. Mike Stoopsesque-level terrible timeout to save a spike, incomplete, and touchdown. To answer your rhetorical question, no. No, I would not say that that drive was a result of terrific play-calling.

I hope you realize the twisty bendy nature of that sentence isn't very credible. Perfect defense? Not saying it was a Perfect offensive playcall but it was way more perfect than Bankers mastermind because Pierce SCORED.

Do people here not understand that Banker is not the DC? He is the LB coach

Number of FB wins in the past 365 days: ONE. Totally irrelevant. 1. Last season was last season. Let it go. This season and last season do not mix. Ask the baseball program. 2. All that matters in sports—especially with a rebuild—is the game ahead of them. If you want to focus on the past, then the team will never get better. 3. We played a very good Oklahoma State team and hung with them for a bit. If we had kicked the extra points that we couldn’t convert, I think we would’ve ended up beating the spread. 4. We controlled the Hawaii game on the scoreboard until the 4th quarter when Hawaii finally took their one and only lead of the game. Pretty sure we beat the spread. 5. Bottom line is that we are outperforming what the pros in Vegas think about us. Let’s see what Saturday brings.

Great athletes often beat great schemes. The play was clearly designed to go to the weak-side, but the strong-side DE beat Brandel so badly that Pierce had to cut back left. The strong-side linebacker got sucked inside and Lavaka dispatched him. Pierce juked both the MLB and the safety out of their shoes and had just enough left in the tank to shake off the strong-side CB's tackle at the four to waltz into the end zone. Pierce is a great RB and showed it there. Oddly, Pierce only had one more rush the rest of the game, unless you count his nine-yard run on Noah Togiai's lateral to end the game. Both RBs were playing well, and I thought that a more of a RBBC approach to end the game may have resulted in a bit more rushing success.

Yeah but see, Banker was Riley's DC, so your point doesn't fit the narrative. Here is my narrative. With both AHC Banker and DC Batoon, Hawai'i has two more experienced defensive coordinators that are able to out X and O a great offensive team like Oregon State. The Warriors' defense is not great but was better with smaller, weaker, and slower talent against a great Oregon State offense than the Beavers' bigger, stronger, and faster defense against Hawai'i's offense. Get rid of Tibs and hire one or, preferably, both. From what I have seen so far, either would be a huge improvement over what we currently have. What is your narrative @blowcheese ?
