1st half football was the game we all expected. It was an offensive shootout! Both teams looked good on O and along the way a few plays on D were made.
2nd half football saw Hawai'i held to 10 points. We win, right? Nope. They held us to ZERO. Go figure! Neither team could claim they were happy with the point output. The Warriors helped sabotage their own cause with missed FG's. At least Choukair's miss came from over 50. As for why our O went down the tubes completely, who knows? It was not like we were unable to run the ball some. A very experienced QB and fine group of receivers was on the field. No doubt the coaches for Hawai'i are wondering how they also did not do well against a poor D. Did someone feed Vitamin D to both D's at halftime?
Positives: Game management at the very end gave us one last shot. Had a flag been thrown on the last play, we wind up in FG range. For all our troubles, one that is not included in the list was competing to the very end of the game. Add in a couple long TD runs by Pierce to go with the over 100 yard game by Jefferson. On D we faced an O which is both explosive and mistake-prone. We were able to collect turnovers, sacks, TFL's and pressure their QB as we gave up the points. That kept us in the game to the very end.
Will our team give up? Will they quit improving? I doubt it. Next up is a weak Cal Poly team. Pencil in the W but more important, see what our coaches and players learn from this contest.

I thought our offense played poorly in the second half because Luton got into a panic mode and was slinging every pass like he was throwing a fastball in game 7 of the world series. No touch and the ball was bouncing off the receivers' hands. I thought that Smith should have pulled him for a couple of series at least to get him to calm down.
That was just my take and others may disagree. But I definitely thought Luton's head was not calm and poised for quite a while.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Sounds reasonable to me. Especially when allegedly there was little to no separation between QB#1 and QB#2 all the way up to the last week of camp. If the coaches believed that narrative, they should have been willing to see what an (nearly) equally skilled player could have done, and if nothing else (as pointed out here) let QB#1 collect himself and play like a sixth year senior...... Go Beavers!

Go Beavers! Yeah... then add we let a LB/3rd?4th? QB handle the ball in a key 4th down AND let our punter try to pass to convert a 4th and 5 from our 30(?). Seems like a co-#1 type should get some field time in the preseason matchups vs just mop drives. I was never anti Luton, but truly thought Gebbia would get some meaningful PT in the preseason... not just Cal Poly. It'd be nice to have a 2.5/3 year starter at QB for once.

The defense isn't giving any respect to the pass in that situation. The fake punt was just a dumb move. Actually make a stupid one considering the field postion.

Add to it that the game was tied and it really makes it a stupid move.

This pretty much sums up my opinion. How the coaches and players learn and respond will be crucial. It is good to have Cal Poly next as hopefully it will be a slump buster and a confidence booster. Play clean and don’t make it close. Go Beavs

It sure seems like Luton fell back on his ‘bad old days’, in which his passes can’t hit his targets, or the receivers are dropping those passes that come close. This was the pattern last year, until a miracle (or something) happened, and he started getting the ball to the receivers. I thought I was going to have to quit thinking bad thoughts about him. However, the second quarter of the first game, and the 3rd & 4th of this one revealed his lack of consistency. I am not sure this can be laid on the coaches and bad play calling. Bad passes on two of four downs sure puts a lot of pressure on the running game.

In the second half we were outcoached, outplayed, and out disciplined. We don't have enough talent to win without being better than the other team in all three.

I don't want to be cliche, and give the worse cliche there is... but this team doesn't know how to win. They have to learn that. Coaches need to step up. Someone in here nailed it. Luton started pressing,as it were. tossing fast balls to 5 yard crossing routes (flashes of young DA there). execution wavered. mental mistakes. All and all, I thought our Defense stepped up well. Hawaii is a decent and explosive defense. But our offense is good enough to answer. This should of been a 42-31 ish game. it had every right to be. Except it didn't. Offense got in it's own head.
