Transfer Portal Power Activated: What's the net outcome for OSU Football, is it; Positive, Negative, Neutral, or to soon to tell?
After D.J. transferred in; "transfer portal is great". After he transferred out: "transfer portal sucks and is ruining college football" LOL
I'm just having fun with this topic and see both sides of it's doors (incoming and outgoing). We did pull quite a few this last class though:

It's both. We are more or less regulated to a farm school/training program unless a player wants to stay. Our best players will always have options. We are also a great spot to land for a player that couldn't land playing time at a program or is a talent in a lower division looking for more opportunity.

There are 15-25 or so programs that are the "major league." Everyone else is a farm team. The hope for everyone outside the top 15-25 is to be a Triple A team. |

Playing field is a bit different, but it's basically the same "haves" and just dividing up more $. While now having more "legitimate" methods to add/buy players. |

We will be like AA in the major leagues because we are not in a power conference. All other power league teams are either equivalent to AAA or major leagues

The conference didn't seem to be a big help in the 30 years preceding MR 1 as I recall either. |

I will say, I am having a much harder time rooting for these kids that are demanding houses and new cars and s%#t every term.
I paid $65,000 to OSU for my BS and MPH. thousands and thousands of kids pay a lot for the priveledge of being at OSU. I get the sheer dollars in college football and the inequity of it.
Seems to me even in the NIL deal, it still really ain't the kids getting the good deal. still feels like only an elite few are making anything end everyone else is exploited.

The only change is it's now much easier to consolidate high school and current D1/D2 talent. The system used to have more risk for schools and players with things like sitting out years. The time investment and commitment by both was much more serious, now even playing for a full season is more of a suggestion. |

And probably every year. Depending on the # that want to play the "super conference" game, OSU can be in the top tier of the next group. The portal works in several ways. First, OSU will gain cast-offs from the "elite". While maybe losing some of the developed talent, OSU may gain is some HS talent. For every portal loss it's one less roster spot/schollie at an elite school. The bottom line to me is nothing really changes in the "order" of things. What did change is revenue. But, even if a worst case occurred in a MWC merger there would be media $. Not like we'd like, but it'd put us on par with those were now competing against. OSU needs revenue to sustain programs, but P4 $ was never going to make OSU "belong" in the "haves" group. And, the keeping up with the Jones' is a waste of time, energy, and resources. |

I think this system gives more advantages to the players than any other sports set up. No commitments necessary. Athletes move as they see fit.
I think things need to be tightened up a bit.

The end point of capitalism without guardrails is always and will always be a monopoly. 100% of the time, and without fail. Animal Farm is a critique of communism, specifically Joseph Stalin. However, I don't think the metaphor is all that mixed. We are in the stage of "re-writing the rules to fit our world view." De-volving from our once held beliefs (seven commandments, if you will) and adapting new ones in a manner that benefits the few, (snowball and napoleon). All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. There doesn't have to be an economic system fit for the metaphor to work. That and I would argue an oligarchy is an oligarchy, regardless of the window dressings of the political system of the home country. There are Oligarchs here in America, and there were Oligarchs in Stalin's brutal regime. |
