What is SO amazing at Autzen that makes all these recruits drool? What do we need to do?

Create hype and pay the local media to talk about how great of a football school we are

In terms of actual functionality of facilities.... Nothing. The difference is in the size and opulence.
It is like asking a family of four why they prefer the 4 bdrm, 3 bath, 6,000 sqft mansion with a pool and a bball court in Highland dell to the 4 bdrm 2 bath 2100 sqft 70's rambler in the witham hill neighborhood...
Functionally, your life would be very similar in both... But the sheer expense and opulence would have 75% (not 100!) choosing the bigger house.
All it really means is we have to find the 25% of players that doesn't care simply for bling for blings sake, but can see some of the downsides of flashy and the upsides of steadiness and substance.
Of course the real rub comes when you DON'T have the flash AND you DON'T have the substance :: cough, QA, Cough ::

1. It isn't Autzen. Recruits don't care much about the stadium - they care about the locker rooms and practice facilities. And that's where Nike has spent most of it's dough.
2. For substantial group of kids - coincidentally, the sort of high-character kids that we have recently preferred - our facilities are much better than theirs. The athlete can go from dorm room to practice facility to meeting room to academic center in about 60 seconds. Their classes are just on the other side of the intramural fields. There are good reasons why we consistently land more kids in more sports on the conference All-Academic teams - more than Stanford, even. That's a potent recruiting message - not for everyone, but for enough to be successful.

Absolutely. In a lot of schools - especially big-city ones - the athletic facilities are nowhere near the main campus. You'll hear former athletes from some schools say that they never saw the actual school campus - and they aren't really exaggerating. Our coaches seem to really appreciate how our department is configured, and I know that's a big part of their pitch.

I remember talking to a transfer from U Miami a few years ago. (J. Moore I think) He told me what he liked about OSU compared to the "football" school he transferred from was the easy ability to concentrate on football and school. Fewer distractions was a good thing for that young man.
Go Beavs!!

Riley and Co had bulls%#t models that they were showing to recruits as the stadium plans that were "about" to be unveiled way back in 97 hahaha. We've always known it was an issue, it still is. There are some weight room additions and things that are still on the wish list, it's about having state of the art training tools at all levels that comes from the additional funds.

What is SO amazing at Autzen that makes all these recruits drool? What do we need to do? It's not Autzen. It's the training facilities that attracts the players.
