I don't know whether it's Wilcox or Baldwin, but Cal's offense under Wilcox has been crud. Their numbers:
2016 (Dykes' last year): 37.1 ppg, 1st in the Pac 12 for totals yards/game
2017: (Wilcox/Baldwin regime's first year): 27.8 ppg, Pac 12: 11th ypg
2018: 21.5 ppg, Pac 12: 12th ypg
2019: 24.5 ppg (going into tonight's contest, in which they scored 17 points), Pac 12: 10th ypg
Tonight against ASU, Cal's backup QB, Devon Modster, (RS junior/transfer) came in late in the 2nd quarter when Cal's starter went down with a shoulder injury. Modster's first drive started with some ok plays but soon spiraled into a sack and ended in an interception with 10 seconds to go in the first half.
Then Cal decided to bolster Modster's confidence by running the ball twelve (12) consecutive times to start the third quarter. A touchdown resulted. Modster then plowed through rest of the game, finishing at 5/14 for 23 yards. On his last drive of the game, he froze up on many pass plays and was afraid to throw a pass. ASU might have played good defense (we can't be certain because they played Cal's offense), but Modster looked like a Division II QB at best.
How is it that Wilcox and Baldwin let Cal's offense "develop" (sort of) with virtually no backup QB in this, their third year?

Our game in Berkeley on the 19th just become a lot more interesting - Modster was SHOCKINGLY bad.

I've never seen so many wide open targets on simple combo routes. If not for... - key drops - missing wide open receivers - 1/3 on FGs ASU should have scored 40.

Oh come on, losing a QB in game is a worst case scenario. He's unprepared because he's been getting 20% of the reps.

I wonder if he's had even 20% of the reps this season. Every team prepares to lose their starting QB during the season. Tonight Cal looked like they were the exception to that rule. It was that bad. lt seemed reflective of their offensive reality ever since Wilcox was hired.

Modster is a UCLA transfer and played some there. Cal wins with tough defense and ball control offense(yes I watched the game last night and the ole Miss game) . Garbers allows Cal to be two dimensional, and he may be out for awhile hurting the vulnerable shoulder/collar bone area on his throwing arm.
If Cal becomes one dimensional, they will be much more vulnerable to every team on their upcoming schedule. I hope the beavs can take advantage of this on the field. Coach Wilcox is a defense first coach...I like that mindset. Defense wins championships. Modster will have to get much better to become a Pac-12 level quarterback...

Defense can be a huge factor in winning championships, but to get there your team still must have some sort of offense. Cal's defense under Wilcox has been good...it was 3rd in the Pac 12 in total yards last year...but not so dominant that the offensive component can be ignored. Cal needs to get a bump in their offense if they want to move up in the Pac 12. Which it looked like they were doing with until their starting QB went down. Cal needs to figure it out quick because their offense was horrendous last night. Like others said, Modster was shockingly bad.

And of course, guess who gets Cal next week.

The current offense by Cal definitely isn't the offense they would run if Baldwin had his way. This type of offense is dictated by Wilcox. Baldwin would definitely have a up tempo more diverse offense.

Agreed...you need to be able to move the chains, and take advantage of what the defense gives you. If Modster isn't producing,Cal is in trouble. I'm glad to see an emphasis on defense by the coaches of this league, because not everyone loves a 67-63 basketball score, and playing physical defense gives you a chance to win in every game. If your offense is competent...

Baldwin would definitely have a up tempo more diverse offense. If Wilcox isn't letting Baldwin run his own offense that is a huge mistake. He's a bit of an offensive guru. It would be akin to if Bellotti had not let Kelly run his offense.

Wilcox chooses to play at a different pace.
They could put up more yards and points if they wanted to, but they’d also lose
