Interesting difference between Auriemma and Mulkey's response to what OSU's defense does. Mulkey said she couldn't figure it out, Auriemma says understood it right away. He said when he watches a defense that he doesn't understand, it's because he doesn't think they know what they are trying to do either, but not the case at all with OSU. However, Auriemma doesn't say he knows how to solve it, rather that he realizes that OSU will force them to make shots that Rueck decides we'll give them, and the onus is on his players to make them. That's NBA-level defensive mindset, where OSU's defense is at the level where they force you to take shots that are statistically disadvantaged (e.g. mid-range jumpers), and at points on the floor where specific players are less comfortable. Baylor fans thought they played terrible, but Mulkey pointed out that they simply didn't make enough of the shots that they were given, and OSU did.
UConn will obviously have more ability to still get the shots they want to take, and make more of the ones their less comfortable with. It's clear that Auriemma is looking forward to the chess match with Rueck. Really cool to read intelligent, knowledgable responses from a coach that actually are insightful. UConn makes such a great villain for the sport - hate them for their extended success, love them for their commitment to excellence.

I don't seen the difference in the responses. Both coach's know what OSU want's to do, ie force you to take shots that you don't want. What she was saying is that she couldn't figure out how they do it so well.

I like how Geno emphasizes that the best coach may be a man or a woman, and that gender does not matter. He doesn't get sucked into a PC discussion.

Geno is an impressive cat... how he handles himself... how he speaks... how he recruits and still develops players... his sustained level of success without a hint of impropriety. Rueck can be that guy too.
