This is the portion that doesn't require a subscription ... The calm voice appears over the headset right as things are getting a little tense in Corvallis. Thirty-one yards passing will make you stressed. Just 174 yards of offense will, too. Oregon State is trailing Washington by seven with ten minutes to go, and offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren might be feeling some pressure. Then he hears the casual, reassuring words of the man in charge. “We’re doing all right. I love your plan. You’re great coaches. Let’s relax and put together a good drive. Don’t panic.” That’s his head coach, Jonathan Smith. If this sounds corny, just be patient. That’s what Smith does. That’s how a program goes from arguably the worst in the Power 5 — from two years without an FBS win — to first place in the Pac-12 North. Patience. That’s how Smith approaches everything, a 42-year-old first-time head coach with a four-paragraph Wikipedia page who took on a behemoth of a program rebuild, kept the same staff throughout and lived to tell the tale. Don’t panic. That’s the motto. It’s what you’ll hear from every staff member you talk to in Corvallis. It’s what you’ll hear from Smith’s old Beaver head coach Dennis Erickson. It’s almost weird, his coordinators admit. He’s just calm. He’s just composed. Defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar struggled to put it any better than: “He’s just totally normal. What does that even mean?” Well, it means he took over a program whose head coach, Gary Andersen, walked away midway through a 1-11 season with the only win being a 3-point squeaker against Portland State. It means he went 2-10 in Year 1 with a not-so-talented and not-so-disciplined roster and still vowed not to veer from the plan. It means he missed a bowl game in 2019 and fell off late in 2020 and still maintained this bizarre faith.

“Yeah, we have some confidence now, but I’m not concerned as a group we’ll ever be at the point we’re overconfident in the season,” Smith said.
“There are too many scars.”
AMEN

This is a quality of a lot of great coaches. Genuine trust in staff and players, and an ability to still think clearly when the stress is high. I also like the team’s ‘all business’ motto this week. Keep it going Beavs!

Keep it going Beavs! All good, but I wish Jonathan weren't quite so confident in his DC. Tibisar's got some pretty good players, but he STILL doesn't know how to defend 3rd and long and is atrocious at in-game adjustments. There are a lot better potential DCs out there.

As an acquaintance states, "Tibsaurus Less". His coaching and schemes have been questioned and exposed everywhere he's been. In W. Lafayette fans hopes rested on him being our DC. Hoping their very below average QB could find some success. Poof! Wish granted. At his current rate of defending 3rd down opponents should just kneel twice to begin each set of downs. Again from another fan friend, Tibs' schemes and alignments only reinforce how much the talent has grown on that side of the ball. Amazing we stop folks at times.

What is consensus of the best on our staff? Clearly OL Coach M one of the best in the country, coached here under Erickson I don’t see him leaving. Lindgren really good and likely hard to keep once the right career job opens, beyond that I like LB Coach Bray , just like his dad he is a future DC hopefully for us. My feeling is our staff has to be really good in order to compete given our recruiting challenges.

Maybe 2 or more seasons in a row of this type of performance. Maybe FCS job? But, if wants to be a HC that bad and give up $700k with a chance to build a solid FBS resume then see ya. Just as in recruiting, you can find gems to run JS's system without selling the farm this soon. It's early in the season and OSU is still considered an oddity. Consistency over multiple seasons will change that. But, with attendance as is, rebuild of Reser OSU can't afford to up the coordinators to Cancrappo levels. OSU is not in the position financially or in credibility to get into bidding war to keep staff. Offer perks, longer term security, sell the small town safe environment for family, and institutional support for the program. But, waaaaay too early for this worry.

Well with his play calling at the end of the game his stock went down even more, maybe DIII.
