The former highly touted Wisconsin QB commit is headed to his third college.
Former Wisconsin Badgers commit and prep standout Austin Kafentzis’s journey in college football has taken another turn, this time to a junior college.
The Reno Gazette-Journal's Chris Murray first reported that Kafentzis was no longer on the Nevada roster on Friday. Trevor Phibbs from the Salt Lake City Tribune followed up shortly thereafter, confirming the Utah prep star had left the Wolfpack program.
The Deseret News’ Amy Donaldson also reported Kafentzis would play at Arizona Western—the same junior college that former Badgers quarterback/safety/wide receiver Tanner McEvoy attended after transferring from South Carolina—due to Nevada offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich accepting the head coaching position at Hawaii.
Kafentzis initially committed to former Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen back in 2013 before reaffirming his verbal pledge in December 2014 when Paul Chryst took over the program. Yet, following speculation that Chryst did not view him as a college-level quarterback, Kafentzis transferred to Nevada and was forced to sit out a year in the process by NCAA transfer rules.
Before his college career, Kafentzis broke 15 state prep records over the course of his high school days in Utah.
Kafentzis’s father, Kyle, spoke to The Deseret News about his son’s latest transfer.
