Yes…… I remember, and was THERE. Hated most of it. Gimmick offense. Crappy, undersized defense. Absolutely NO administrative support. In fact; NEGATIVE support. Wilhelm was tougher than old leather. Respect. Watching most of those games was an abomination. Just like, Fertig, Avezzano, Pettibone……and Andersen. A monumental waste of…….. YOU NAME IT! Riley1….Erickson…..Riley2, and, now Smith……. Although, not perfection….., RESPECTABILITY. I do not remember the era very well, but Oregon State was rotten from the top at the time. President John V. Byrne forced Andros out to hire Kragthorpe over Andros' choice of Dennis Erickson. Then, Byrne hired Lynn Snyder, and Snyder tanked basketball. Things started to turn around with the hiring of Dutch Baughman. Baughman was unable to fix the basketball program, but hired Pat Casey and then Mike Riley before people began to attack him for not fixing everything fast enough. Baughman is famous at Virginia Tech for hiring Frank Beamer and turning a moribund program into the consistently competitive program that it is today. Baughman started the build of Oregon State baseball and the rebuild of Oregon State football, as well. I contend that Dutch tanked the men's basketball program more than Lynn Snyder. After the 92-93 season he made Jimmy Anderson a lame duck for his final two years offering no contract extension and no vote of confidence - he essentially let him slowly retire after finishing out his contract after the 94-95 season. Even with a two-year head start he couldn't find anyone better than Eddie Payne, someone he met at a religious conference.

Baughman wanted to hire Rocky Long, and told the players that Long was going to be their new head coach. He was overruled, and Riley was hired instead, although Baughman almost screwed that one up. A news conference was called and set up, but then cancelled at the last minute when they could not reach satisfactory terms. Riley returned to USC, not sure if he was going to take the job. Fortunately, that was eventually ironed out but Riley never signed a contract while Baughman was AD. Baughman was essentially fired in the spring of 1997; coincidentally his last day as AD was also the day the new, upgraded Valley Football Center was opened to the public for inspection. Riley did not sign his contract until interim AD Lee Schroeder took over. For all intents and purposes, Jack Riley hired Pat Casey, just as in reality Casey hired Mitch Canham. I don't know about Rocky Long, but, otherwise, your timing is all wrong. Dutch Baughman present at Mike Riley's hiring announcement conference. The contract had been in place for 6+ months by the time that Baughman announced that he was retiring. Also, I had always heard that Jack Riley wanted Baughman to hire his assistant, Kurt Kemp, but Baughman overruled him. In everything that I have ever read, Casey credits Baughman with his hiring, not Riley. Riley should get a ton of credit for keeping the program going, but I have never heard that he was responsible for hiring Casey over Kemp. In fact, I have always heard that the opposite was true.

You are incorrect. Mike worked on a gentleman's agreement from his hiring date until Baughman left. He signed it on the practice field after Schroeder began as the interim ID. The photo you posted was taken as his hiring PC, I think it was a Monday or Tuesday. A press conference had also been set up for the previous Thursday or Friday but was postponed, and Mike returned to LA. I can guarantee you that is true because I talked to Mike that day before he returned to LA and he was unsure at that point if he was coming back. You are really incorrect about Riley wanting Kemp. Kurt might have thought he was going to be the next coach, but Riley pushed for Casey, and that fact was driven home again by Jim Wilson at the Diamond Dinner on Friday night. I have no idea where you ever heard that Riley advocated for Kemp. Dutch did not know if a baseball was stuffed or pumped, he never attended games. Things worked out much better for Kurt anyways.

I remember AD Baughman won’t give Mike Riley the key to the Valley Football Center until Baughman moved on. No idea why. Wasn’t happy with him for not fire Jimmy Anderson earlier. And same with Jerry Pettibone who decided to resign without be fired.

Jack Rainey? Or Jack Riley? Jack Rainey was a huge Casey supporter and probably why he got the job. And Casey still talks highly about both Baughman and Rainey. And this is all not to say that Riley was 100% behind the hiring once it happened. Riley was always a huge baseball fan. I just had always heard that Riley was pushing for Kemp before the hiring happened. Kurt had a great thing with the Braves until 2011. Then, did he get cancer, or is he still doing ok? I had never heard any of that Baughman/Long/Riley stuff. I had assumed that Baughman was behind the hiring, or at least not opposed. Mike would know better than me what actually happened. You are right about Baughman's general interest in baseball, when compared to football. Even Casey would agree to that.

Wow. Arguing when video shows Dutch and Riley. Some Hatred goes deep. Who cares anyway? The only thing I would have liked was a commitment to all Sports. Something frankly we are still waiting for.

On the hiring Mike Riley in '97 without a signed contract, I do remember that. I can't remember how long it went on other than it was many months. Baughman retired in early August so it's quite possible that it was someone else that got the deal done.
Unfortunately the internet isn't much use in verifying news stories that old.

With all due respect Hal was no where in sight when much of Jack's take on retiring and succession took place. Nor was Hal there in coach's meetings. But, again... it doesn't matter who you believe. It's basically trivia. PS- you'd be in a world of hurt if you believed every "tale" Jack spun. LOL

LOL Still and all, I can either believe direct testimony from the individual in question or hearsay from some guy on an internet message board. Neither option is perfect or error free. But from a historical standpoint I'll go with the former over the latter 99 times out of 100.
